Hello,
Approx how long - doesn't have to be exact - but how long appromixately does it take to do this-say 1 page?
I keep getting asked for estimates and I am not sure if these are decent estimates or not? And one time I was way off when I realized I had redo their Quark page altogether. Anyway just curious if anyone has feedback...
thank you!

Its a "How long is a piece of string" question.
It'll vary depending on your experience, expertise and how much you are able to reuse from what you have done before. Forms are fiddly and take longer. Browser & OS compatibility add more again, but can be mitigated if you're able to test several pages at once.
Hey Chris, thanks for your
Hey Chris,
thanks for your reply.
Can we say you - at your level - sounds like you know a lot - say 1 page -no code resuse - and CSSing for the all the major Browsers. I just want to get an idea - roughly. I know there are a lot of factors but based on the above is there any rought estimate your cuold give me for 1 page??
thanks

I'd say about 14. Give or take.

fx, we cant possibly give you an accurate prediction on how long it will take to build a web page. We have no specifics about anything here. Maybe if you povided us with a mock-up, we could tell you how long it would take us to build the page.

I understand - here - how long would it have taken you to do this page for example? Say it was given to you in table layout and you were asked to convert to CSS layout.

Not sure why you are perusing this after the responses you have received. Me ? that would take about 2 hours perhaps, maybe less, it's not complex, to fully finish the site who knows things are always fastest and most gain made at the start.
Lets us ask how long it would take YOU to do it?

ooh you fibber, oh well if graphics supplied it would take me 25 minutes

Well. I recently built a
Well. I recently built a WordPress site from a PSD file.
Reusing nothing besides recycling the doctype.
From my first line of code, to integrating into wordpress, to testing and fixing in all major browsers, to pushing live. Took me less than 5 hours. But, I've also been doing this for about a month or so... or maybe it's been 12 years, I can't remember anymore...
It also validates, uses two conditional style sheets for IE6-7 and IE8, with dynamic drop downs. And all of that fun stuff...
Most novices I know, it would have taken them 20-40 hours to successfully build, test, and launch.
Although, this is one of the reason my clients keep coming back to me project after project...

I'm with Hugo. A couple of hours. Maybe the HTML+CSS would take me 30 minutes. But all the faffing about, saving the PSD out of the email, cutting the images, checking in FF,IE6,7,8,Safari,Chrome. Writing the reply back once its done. Several calls when this or that is changed. Plus writing the original quote, writing the invoice, chasing up payment. Chasing Up Payment. CHASING UP PAYMENT (or checking that the original payment in advance has cleared).

The OP wants to know how long it would take to build the page. Hes not asking about phone calls, quotes, invoices, or any of that crap. Simply, how long would it take to build the page. My first response i said if the graphics were provided. That means 30min for JUST the coding. no image slicing. all that is given to us. testing in the dif. browsers would be fast since the layout is easy to code cleanly. I stand by my 30min.
I still say 14.

Okay, thanks guys. I just wanted an idea. So now I know I am on the slower side. It took me about 10 hrs to do all 4 pages. Although..i was having trouble with the background since it's not an even layout if you look closely (at least I found that tricky) and some other issues with the browsers displaying differently - even IE7 and IE8. I was also having notepad issues on my new comp so that def added time now that I think about it...
Anyway, thanks again. Will work on speeding things up.

10 hours to do 4 pages along
10 hours to do 4 pages along with graphics, sorry but this thread has issues with all this notion of speed crap.
10 hours might be slightly slower than many of us would have taken, but then again perhaps not, it depends on many factors, not the least are graphics, this aspect can be the slowest and end up being trickier than expected, all too often I have been caught out looking at psd thinking that's simple enough, and having a fair idea before beginning how I would approach the placement of graphics and the slices I would probably need to produce then I set to it and realise it was slightly trickier than first thought.
Speed comes with experience, and that's with any skill set not specifically coding. Try to rush at work and force pace can end up costing time - speed must be allowed to develop naturally.
In addition to what Hugo
In addition to what Hugo says, spend some time every so often to look at how your working and thinking about how you can improve things.
Where are you spending time?
Are there different tools or can you change the way you do things to get a better workflow.
E.g.
- Do you spend a lot of time checking syntax/properties online. A reference book might help.
- Do you get a lot of interruptions in your work. A quieter working area / switch phones off to answer machine. Close down email/twitter/IM.
- Do you find your self switching tabs/windows/apps and then having to find where you are or need to be. Consider a second or larger monitor.
- etc, etc.
If there is a particular area you think you're spending too much time to achieve too little, ask here how other people do that thing (always say how you do it too).
