Position Absolute Center Horizontal Vertical

I'm confused whether when to use left: 0; right: 0; in an absolute positioned element. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, are there any requirements on the element's parent DIV for it to work? I want to understand.

Same goes for vertical aligning: top 50%; transform: translateY(-50%);
