Well, I've taken up the cudgels, joined the forces of darkness, and am converting a couple of older sites to Wordpress version three, mainly because I finally found a theme I can really work with, namely "weaver" which is amazingly flexible and puts out valid code, to boot.

What I really need is a nice "light box" type plugin to show pictures in a way that people seem to like. I don't want to face coding my own, and I've really forgotten all the little I ever knew about javascript.

I've done some searching but haven't found anything that I really like. What do you use, or know of, for displaying pictures in this fashion? Or should I just use the basic functionality of WP3, which is not all that bad.

Anybody else use the "weaver" theme?

I had a look and it seems decent. I've abandoned Wordpress though as I just don't like PHP.

Concerning the lightbox picture popup thing I've used prettyPhoto, a jQuery plugin with good results. http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyphoto-jquery-lightbox-clone/

Never used it separately as

Never used it separately as such, but guess if building a component or plugin it could be used by the normal process of adding class='thickbox' ?width=500&height=500

WP admin dashboard uses it quite a bit for display of themes/plugins when searching for them via theme/plugin admin pages.

You are right about what it does with theme previews. Interesting. Where would I put that class code for a given image in the main blog? in the IMG tag word in the media library somewhere? I am ignorant about using classes in wordpress I'm afraid! Do I have to find a php file and modify it?

Appreciate the quick replies.

I've tried a couple of "lightbox" type plugins but couldn't figure out how to make them work.

As for building a plugin I'm totally ignorant about how to do that as well.

Hmm interesting question,

Hmm interesting question, should know the answer but not sure really; pretty sure you can't add attributes to the media library images so you would have to select the image embed it in a post and then - ensuring you were in markup (HTML) view - add the class to the anchor link to image, the query string is the one that I can recall off the top of my head as being the Ajax trigger, but there are variations on that for triggering thickbox into action, and knowing ... just checked ( so much easier Smile ) WP uses the Thickbox Iframe call TB_iframe so likely you might have to use that, however they will be using that as they are accessing remote content so I would try the ajax call first as it's more appropriate where an image is concerned.

In all of this forgot to say

In all of this forgot to say that it's worth looking for a gallery plugin, one thing WP is not short on are a million and one plugins ranging from the daft simple ones to some mind bogglingly complex pieces of work.

You can try the jQuery

You can try the jQuery Colorbox plugin http://www.techotronic.de/plugins/jquery-colorbox/theme-screenshots/ or the non-plugin version http://colorpowered.com/colorbox/

That's the obvious thing of course and I was doing that before I posted but coming up short. Finally found one that works, though, "NextGen" which does most of what I wanted. Still haven't figured it out fully, but it should work just fine for my purpose.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

'NextGen' is a well known and

'NextGen' is a well known and respected offering, also like the sound of FernE97's link to colorBox which looks like a well coded version of lightbox.

About two days before Ed

About two days before Ed posted this, I discovered a hover action photo pop up i really liked. Looked at the source to find it was prettyphoto. Shock

However I cannot find this action (pardon the website Smile) on the prettyphoto demo site - would someone please enlighten me?

Note that it doesn't dim the screen for a lightbox.

Note also that I know nothing about jquery - I'm a 'find the function and paste code' kinda gal - just in case you don't know it yet Wink

Mods and gurus – THANK YOU!
For your time, knowledge and experience so willingly and generously given.
Please come back tomorrow and sort us all out again Smile
