Add div to wordpress with ul list to left and text to right.

I need to add an extra div into my wordpress content and have a ul list to the left of this div with separate text to the right. I have tried everything but cannot get it to work except in Firefox but in Chrome some the text from outside the bottom of the div leapt to the top above the div; any help would be much appreciated as I am losing the will to live.
I have tried so many different ways that I am now unable to remember which way actually worked in FF and gave the result above; but I believe it involved using three separate divs.
