Current Link with background image.

I have created a class for my links which applies only to the current page. The font style remains, but the background image only appears when you hover over it. Can anyone see what I have done incorrectly with my text and help me fix this problem?

CSS:

a{
	font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
	color:#034EA2;
	font-size:14px;
}
a:hover{
	font-weight:bold;
	color:#034EA2;
}
a.active{
	color:#034ea2;
	font-weight:bold;
	font-family:Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
	}
body{
	margin:auto;
	height:900px;
	width:1024px;

main-text links using CSS?

I'm trying to emulate something similar to text/links in this page: http://chriscmerritt.com/

but the way I would normally do it would be to stick the hrefs in the text itself, whereas I think the designer of the above page has got a CSS technique which allows him to write the text then list the hrefs beneath which somehow activate the desired text to become links and be of a different colour - so I wondered if anyone knows how this might be done.
If I'm not making myself clear then check out the sourcecode on his page

been racking my brains all day but not getting anywhere!!?!

Link tag doesn't work.

This is the weirdest thing.

I've been using my CSS right in the head and it worked fine, but when I decided to save it as a separate file and added the link tag in the head
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="mystyle.css">
the CSS no longer works.

The html and css files are in the same directory, and the css is W3C validated. I even tried running it through Apache, but that didn't make a difference. Some older files I had work fine, but this new one does not work at all. Is there any reason this is happening?

Link won't work? CSS Validated

Hello

I've been slowly trudging along, trying to properly learn CSS and building this navbar. I've rebuilt it a number of times now and I believe I have handled it correctly, or semantically this time.

I have one problem, the initial H1 tag will not act as a link in the way I believe it should and I can't figure out what I have done wrong here. The link is question is the first image in the menubar that reads Pony Attack, it should link home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
