I've been having a little trouble using FileZilla. Might very well just by my lack of understanding some of the industry-standard verbiage. If it turns out FileZilla is the one, then I will go back and see if I can get it to work....
So on to my subject question: Which is the best ftp software & why?
Which is the best ftp software & why?
What platform ?
WS_FTP (Ipswitch software) Win: XP, 2000,98
Is essentially the industry standard and the programme many swear by and that is recommended when people ask about the leading ftp programmes on the market (there used to be a free lite version which I've used very happily but that seems to have been withdrawn)

But I'm sure there are many others. Fireftp plugin for Firefox is ok for basic lightweight work.

SmartFTP ftw
Although I have used ws_ftp and it is good.

XP platform
Pricetag's a little steep for me at this time. I'll keep watching.
I did google ftp in general and WS_FTP seems to be the frontrunner on a lot of sites that recommend ftp packages.

FlashFXP... a great FTP product... and VERY cheap... cost me £16 ($25).
www.flashfxp.com - A great FTP program, I've tried others, but this was the solution for me!

I use Transmit. Just in case a Mac user has the same question.

I use FTP Explorer. Its ancient, it may even be a Win95 version I have, it runs, doesn't give problems and is real easy to use. If I need anything more I'll use WinSCP or a direct SSH connection with PuTTY.

Thank you everyone. I finally figured out how to use FileZilla. One of those "D'oh!" moments when everything finally clicked! I will certainly keep the other sites in my bookmarks for the time being. Hopefully other new folks will find this thread a useful resource for FTP options.
