I have a 2 column page layout with a header and footer. The example page can be found at http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~umstein9/index2.htm .

Within the navigation column (#nav) I have inserted a vertical dynamic javascript menu where the submenus appear to the right where the body content is. My problem is when I mouse over a button, the submenu appears farther down the side of the menu than it should. It appears that the header DIV is pushing it down. Is there anyway around this?

I believe this is a CSS question since the menu works great on a page by itself. (i.e. the submenu lines up with the button you are over)

Thanks.

javascript menu

Hi Smackboy,
It works fine in Netscape 7.
In Opera 7 no menu displays.
In Ie 6 the menu is out of place as mentioned in your post.

I don't have an answer for you after the quick look I have had.
It would take time to look through the javascript, possibly tomorrow if I have time.

One thing I will mention is that the menu uses javascript to detect the browser, nothing wrong with this but keep in mind new browsers are coming out all the time.
Make sure you know the browsers of your target market.
Are you willing to continue to maintaining the menu :?:
Try to provide another means of navigation for browsers such as Opera.

Ie6's rendering of the browser lower then expected is a small thing compared to no menu at all.

Problem with header DIV and navigation bar

Thanks for the reply Tony.

I'm aware of my target market and Opera isn't a concern right now, I may work on something else in the future. I thought this was the best way in terms of convenience and for the content of my page, but its turning out more of a hassle.

I've looked through the javascript and I'm stumped, if you would like to check it out it would be appreciated.
DHTML menu

Hi Smackboy,
I've had a look through the code and without dissecting it completely can't work out a solution.

Maybe someone else will find a solution.

A few years ago I used an earlier version of the menu at http://www.brothercake.com/dropdown/ it was good then and should be even better now.
I can't promise you wont come up with the same problem but it should be worth a try.

Problem with header DIV and navigation bar

If you decide to try a different menu implementation, you might like to check out www.dynamicdrive.com, and in particular the menu and navigation page at:

Problem with header DIV and navigation bar

The reason I like the one I'm using is because it has a rollover effect (I don't need images, I just need the background color of the full button to change), submenus, I just inserted the script in the my side div (with no positioning needed), and I can change everything from one central file.

Anyone know of one like this?
