Hi everyone,

I have this list here:

<ul class="main-nav">
   <li><a href="content.html">Worship</a></li><!-- -->
   <li><a href="content.html">Calendar</a></li>
   <li><a href="content.html">Education<br /><span>Children &amp; Adults</span></a></li>
   <li><a href="content.html">Community<br /><span>OutReach</span></a></li>
   <li class="last"><a href="content.html">Member<br /><span>Support Services</span></a></li>
</ul>

and every validation check fails.

error message:
character data is not allowed here

anyway, i've tried breaking this down to simple, no link, no span, no break Ul and LI list and I still get these errors!

maybe i've looked at this too long, but can someone throw me a bone here?

THANKS!!!

&quot;character data&quot; not validating in simple list???

There is nothing wrong with the code you have posted above, it validates fine under XHTML1-strict at w3c. You may want to check exactly what your server is serving rather than your page source.

&quot;character data&quot; not validating in simple list???

How about giving us a live link? Errors like that are sometimes the fallthrough from another error. Plus, that's not the full, verbatim error message, is it?

cheers,

gary

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

&quot;character data&quot; not validating in simple list???

Tip, set your href attributes to "#" to avoid them generating validation errors.

&quot;character data&quot; not validating in simple list???

I suspect you're saving your files as unicode in some MS product. Resave as ASCII or ANSI.

cheers,

gary

actually using Mac OS 10.4/Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Will try saving out to a text file though.
