Err, Roy, don't you have to take yer hand out of yer pocket first?

Yessir, Gary, much deserved - I guess I had assumed you were a "guru" already so it didn't come as a surprise.

Well, it looks like everybody noticed the change of status before I did. Thanks, Tony. Thanks to the rest of you for your kind comments.

As is Hugo, I am a man of the people and do not insist on extreme obeisance, toadying, brown-nosing, or sycophancy to mark my newly elevated status. A simple obsequious attitude and a ritual kowtow will be enough. Wink

@roytheboy; What David said, but wash your hands, too. Smile

cheers,

gary

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

I thought it would be most appropriate for your signature, David Laughing out loud

When you want to reply to a post that doesn't validate, or whatnot, this little fella points them to your signature.

Guru?

How do you achieve the rank Guru?...

Is it how many posts you reply?
Or
Does the Admin change your rank to Guru when he feels likes it?

Both. The more posts you get, the more stars you get.

Also, if you're guru material, then Tony will make it happen.

Why, are you interested? Laughing out loud

Guru

Hi zyiiilo1,
As I am sure you know or have at least assumed, the rank of Guru isn't given out willy nilly as my gran would say.
To achieve the rank of guru here you need to so a commitment to helping others and also have good knowledge of CSS.
This needs to be shown consistently over a long period of time.

Although making kk5st a guru need no justification and none has been asked for, his case may clarify the process for others.
kk5st has been a member for over a year now and in that time has helped many people. I often see his name in the list of people browsing the site and also know from reading thousands of his posts he is polite, professional and always willing to help.
Although I had noticed his contribution to the forums, as I have noticed others it was a post from another respected forum member, making mention of his good work that finally tipped the scale.
So from this you can assume that reaching the rank of guru is not easy but also not impossible. There is no set formula or timeline to reach guru.

I am sure that many of our members are potential gurus and hopefully I wont be too tight to acknowledge them when the time is right. Wink

Both. The more posts you get, the more stars you get.

I'm sure it's going to be more about the quality of those posts rather than the quantity though. I've been posting on here more regularly in the last few weeks and in a few months could quite possibly have a post count that rivals the gurus, but I know I've got a lot further to go in the knowledge stakes before I could be considered for that status.

OT a bit - sorry - but TPH, I have 2 questions for you:

1. Why is your blog called Grumpy Old Man - how old are you? Surely Grumpy Whippersnapper would be more accurate!

2. Hope the interviews went well - did you manage to refrain from pointing out that their site has no DOCTYPE and uses tables...

In general I would find it interesting to know how people who frequent this site a lot manage to deal with jobs where they may be forced to code in a manner they disagree with. Do you just do it and take home the cheque? Try to effect a change from within?

My strategy is so simple an idiot could have devised it!

Rofl Laughing out loud

I'm 18. I'm grumpy. I'm 19 in two months. Did I mention I'm grumpy?

Got another interview tomorrow, it looks good, and I'm converting them to the use of doctypes and CSS.

In fact, in an IM conversation with Neil (the owner), he said himself the site is old and built for IE. Ah Laughing out loud

Well, I'm off to go play CS Source against him. Laughing out loud

Jeez I'm nearly 20 years older than you - that's depressing. Time seemed to go so slowly until I was about 26 then BAM suddenly I'm sneaking up on the big 40.

... god knows how DCElliott and Roytheboy cope....

Good luck with the interview - In MK too? Handy. Just as long as they stay away from Bedford!
