hello, i am making my first website, and i tried learning CSS numerous times, but i can't! i don't understand anything about it, or even get a code or 2. i know html very well, and thought this would be a breeze, but it isn't. Sad is there anyone that can explain it easily. you can contact me on yahoo instant messenger if you need to, instead of typing it all on here.

I can't learn CSS.

Have you looked around for some good CSS tutorials? I've found the stuff over at w3Schools to be very helpful.

You also might want to try checking out the links page for this site. There are a ton of useful links to places that explain it quite simply.

Also, you can just do a search on Google for "CSS Tutorials".

Those ought to get you started.

I can't learn CSS.

i already went to a lot of them, but none of them really explain why i need to do things.... i dunno how to explain it, but it's like they say make a external style sheet, but i don't know what it is or why i need it.

This is off topic but contacting off board is a rotten idea.

The purpose of this place is for you and others to read and learn. Learn from other's mistakes and experiences. To take it off board or to private messages defeats the whole purpose.

Now, you! Start reading. Smile

Styles can be attached to a page in 3 different ways:
1. an external style sheet is a file that you link to your page that contains all your CSS and will affect all elements on every page of your site
2. an internal stylesheet goes within <style type="text/css"></style> tags in the head section of your document and affects all elements on only the page it is included on
3. inline stylesheets are attached to individual elements and only affect that element e.g. <p style="color: black">

To create an external stylesheet you open up whatever editor you use, type out your styles and then save it with a .css extension.
The advantage of having an external stylesheet is that it can apply to every page of your site whereas the other 2 can't. It makes it easy to make site-wide changes. You may still have cause to use the other 2 if you have pages that contain styles that don't exist anywhere else.

and just start basic and keep with it! re-read a tutorial until you REALLY understand it. Once you connect with a few ideas you will wonder how you ever lived without it!

Your first visit should be to http://www.htmldog.com
Check out the (really basic) tutorials on CSS.

I only started making websites in early April this year - worked my way through the HTML & CSS tutorials and it all starts to make sense.

As you progress - come back here and ask, everyone's been really helpful since i started posting

I can't learn CSS.

I would strongly suggest a solid book to help get your foot in the CSS door. Designing with Web Standards by JZ (Jeffrey Zeldman) is an essential one to start with. You can easily find this on Amazon.com. There's nothing like a hard copy to use as reference when you first get started with anything technical.

I can't learn CSS.

Quote:

hello dear, Its just my personal advice
first you should learn the basics , the core language of css,
visit cssbeauty or other inspirational site, see how the professionals are working on css, download the pages and try to understand the css created by them.
It will take time to understand the css, but it will help you more than tutorials.
I learned css like this.

I can't learn CSS.

If we are suggesting books then one of my favorites (then and now) is "Web Standards Solutions" by Dan Cederholm... he also does the site SimpleBits.

I just think his writing style conveys css principle very well and in an interesting way.

I can't learn CSS.

These are two excellent resources:

1) http://glish.com/css/
2) http://www.mako4css.com/

Just cut and paste the code into your web authoring tool and start changing things around to your liking. I found the "holy Grail" layout on the first link extremely useful and easy to follow. On the second one, do the tutorial on Positioning: http://www.mako4css.com/Tutorial.htm.

Hope it helps.

hands on tutorials

i spent a month reading the tutorials and couldn't get it. downloaded stylemaster and layout master and used their tutorials and now i get it - at least the basics - they're great cuz you can make a change and then see what it did.
