When viewing, say, the list of threads in the beginner's forum, I would like to have an indicator of some sort to mark the threads in which I've posted. There are times when I would like to check whether follow-up is needed, and don't have time, or maybe the energy, to look at stuff that didn't interest me the first time I saw it, or is new and that I would prefer to read later.

This is a great convenience on other fora. If it's not too much trouble to add, it would be great here. Since this seems to be the week to ask Tony for stuff ….

This must have been discussed before, but the right key words have eluded me. Forum searches have returned zilch.

cheers,

gary

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

:? Gary is not what your describing and wishing for covered by 'view your posts' which shows only the posts that you have contributed to and when a new post is added to any topic will indicate itself with the orange icon as fresh, since your last viewing of the thread as well as obviously climbing to the top of the listing. Is this not how you check whether you need to respond to any threads you are active in ? that's how I do it then move on to 'view latest posts' I really if ever go into the actual sub forum topic listings.

Invision Power Board indicates threads you've posted to by adding a dot onto the icon before the thread name (see attachment) which, I think, is what is being mentioned.

Hugo's workaround works for me though. Smile

View your posts is phpbb's way of ID'ing posts you've replied to versus Invision's method of adding a marker of some sort (the dot in the middle of the envelope icon)

Not wishing to sound funny and clearly Tony you are in need of something to occupy your time with Smile but I just don't get the point of indicating in the subforums which threads you have posted to, thats what the 'view your posts' is for isn't it and dropping in there first tells you if anyone has added to any post that you're active in and that you need to check then you can move on to 'view posts since last visit' where you will find all your posts that you have viewed in 'view my posts' grayed out and only new posts highlighted orange.

There was something that I had noticed that never quite functioned correctly but naturally when it comes to needing to mention it I have lost it completely

Hugo: You, and others, have a point. Consider, though, that you've opened the beginner's forum and are scanning for threads of interest, not merely your own posts. (I'll grant that viewing subject lines is not very rewarding given the state of the art in composing said lines. Wink)

Also, if you're in and out of the fora, the 'new' designation can get lost. This thread, for example, due to whatever, did not show up as new even though there were 5 responses since I was here last.

Tony: Appreciated.

cheers,

gary

There's an easy way to see if your reply is the last one, or someone has replied to you.

Enable auto logon.

If you see a post you remember posting in, but the icon is blue, there are no replies and no follow up needed yet.

If it's orange, there are replies, and it's worth reading.

Simple!

And how many subject lines are enough to the point that there is a relation to the actual subject? Too, I may be showing signs of senile dementia, but I don't always recall whether I posted a specific answer to css-d or any of the three forums I frequent, or for that matter what the subject line was. Further, I am not usually concerned about a specific thread, but rather in general whether some thread I have posted to has followup posts. A simple marker to indicate my participation would make for a simple scan. This is the only forum of the three without that feature. Mail lists handle this implicitly, except for Outlook(Express) users whose MUA is either a mis-configured PoS or Windows users don't know how to reply to a list. Laughing out loud

I have had a go at getting this working, it is still in a beta stage, like everything I do Smile .
Topics that you have posted to and have since been posted to by other users should show a small white box in the new post icon.

Testing is very testing, as you need to keep login in as different users, so I have uploaded it here to see how it goes.

Tony, it is my thought that the marker should appear on all threads in which the user has participated. As I mentioned, the new can wear off the thread if you're in and out of the forum. Too, you might read a response, but not answer immediately. The marker makes things just that much easier to find it again. It'll make it easier to test. Laughing out loud Just looking out for you. Wink

Beta report:

I'm a bit more prolific (or is that profligate?) than I ever imagined. Going through the forums today, I see that I've posted to every thread. Wow, I'm good. Smile

That's probably a bug.

Um, not since that little procedure. I am no longer fecund, but have ever been profligate. Laughing out loud Wink ;) :nudge: :nudge:[1]

Interesting new twist. I'm getting some false positives. http://www.csscreator.com/css-forum/sutra53887.html#53887 and http://www.csscreator.com/css-forum/ftopic11469.html and http://www.csscreator.com/css-forum/ftopic11419.html are all indicated as threads to which I've contributed.

Are there any false negatives? I haven't noticed, but maybe someone else has.

I'm getting false positive and negative. It seems to be an up 'shift' in thread contribution. What I mean is, of two threads that having new content, the one I contributed to had no indication of such, while the one above it (which I didn't contribute to) had the indication.

Tony- It would be helpful if you put a legend on the your post page. I couldn't tell which had new posts. It'd be cool if the ones with new posts floated up.
