Free? Doubt it - if you do then it'll be FULL of adverts!
I got started through freedom2surf who did my broadband last year, and gifted me 25Mbs of PHP/mySQL space for nothing extra. Very nice.

I use wiserhosting.com and find them really helpfull, with a good support system - for when you get stuck !!, and they do a budget hosting package for £20 per year with php, my sql etc or £27 for Chilli Soft ASP.
I'm still a bit of a html-er and ain't really used the other stuff yet, but I'd have no problem recommending them for being all round good eggs !!

I'm using 1and1.com. 3 years free, 500mb of space, supports all of the web technologies etc. Still not sure if the deal is that great because I'm new to the hosting world.

That is a fantastic deal, 3 years free hosting with those kind of specs anywhere is good! I'm trying to sign up myself but hit problems with the sign-up form; I'm not from the US or Canada... The price of the professional package is a bit pricey (imho) to keep up after that, but then that's gonna be 3 years before you have to worry about it!

Yeah, there was a long discussion about it at another forum where everyone was trying to poke holes in the deal - but no real show stoppers emerged - so I signed up. So far it's not bad - although the admin screens take forever to load - but now I'm skipping those and going command line FTP.
Here's my take. They are going to sign up a whole bunch of people, and like sands through the hourglass, time will eventually expire. If you've invested heavily in development and get a strong site going, you're not likely to bail just because it's no longer FREE. So, they'll end up filtering out all the riff-raff and end up with a handful of new customers.
Not a bad approach if that's what the underlying theme really is.
I do have one question though - with my limited experience in hosting services etc. is the spec below any good?
5,000 MB/month traffic ($.99 per GB for additional traffic)
No limits on simultaneous hits/bandwidth
Thanks,
Kenny

It's free. Of course it's good. And $1 for another Gig? Sounds good to me. Don't know the price of bandwidth with other places.
There is a catch to signup of course - you've got to be resident in America / Canada. Damn.
