Hello guys (and gals). I've just finished overhauling my site-- at least the important parts of it.

I need your comments, especially from people who are using browsers other than IE, FireFox and Opera. Also, from Mac users and from people who have mobile devices.

There's still a lot to do about the site but my concern now is the layout and perhaps the content (for copywriting savy posters). Also, font sizes, positioning and any other issues that you all may want to take up.

Thanks a lot in advace.

I'd like to see is some left padding on those input boxes.

Also, do not use fully justified text for paragraphs. It's harder to read, and makes the wording appear stretched - not very professional. Word and line spacing can do a great deal of good though.

Also, on the bottom few links (Image Gallery, Music) I don't like the line extended all the way to the image. I think it would be better with a gap:

I also don't like the right column with white text - a bit too harsh.

Nice job though.

Hey, thanks for commenting. I've actually been thinking about that "justification" issue that you've mentioned, I may tweak that one soon while adding some word and letter spacing. We'll see how it goes. Smile

Of course, the left padding on the input boxes will be included in my next edit. Thanks again.

More please? Laughing out loud

*Edit: Done updating CSS with consideration to points raised above.

No oddities in Safari and Firefox on Mac. In Mac IE 5.2 the floats aren't behaving like in Pineapple's screenshot. The center column (text) drops below the left column icons.

ABCruz,

Looks very very nice. Great work.

You know the music link is inactive?

One suggestion about the gallery, music, and journal pages. . . . Perhaps having links to the gallery, music, and journal pages from each other would be slick. Just a suggestion.

This is my big chance . . . yep, I blew it . . .

n8gz4ez: Thanks man. Yes, the Music section is still inactive. I'm actually looking for a free MP3 host now, any suggestions?

here's a screen shot of the left bar and content in Mac IE.

edited p.s. I found this site Libsyn.com in a how-to on podcasting. I know nothing else about them. Podcasts are MP3s and they host 'em.

I think it all looks pretty good. The only thing I don't like is the default validator buttons - they don't really go with the rest of your theme I don't think.

Hello guys, sorry I haven't been posting much these past few weeks. Been busy. But now that I have some free time, I decided to make a layout change for my website. I just completed converting my Index Section and I'd appreciate your learned comments. Laughing out loud

The address is http://www.abcruz.com but please don't go to the Gallery, Music and Journal sections because they're still quite messy.

Cheers!

Great Site

Hi Ab.

Just thought I'd take a look at your site and give you feedback. Like you did with mine. Cheers for that.

Must say the site looks great...really good am impressed. Tested the increase and decrease of text in Firefox and Netscape 8, everything fine.

Just one little nit pick.....nothing major, but on your homepage next to your images links index, gallery etc. why have you got one sided greyed out to the right of the images and not greyed out on the left side of the images....nothing major but just wondered why you have done this??

Another query ..when you click on a link say gallery and then hit the go back one page arrow in the top left of the browser. It takes you out of the site......why does it do this???

Has I said not major critiscism, but a great site Smile

Attractive. One big beef, though. What's with the mystery meat navigation? Having to scrub the nav images to see where they take you (if you figure out the images are links), is cute with a usability rating that approaches zero. You should really do something about that.

cheers,

gary

Thomas(?): Yeah, I just noticed the backbutton quirk. I think it has something to do with Gary's question regarding the "mystery" links. I had to put in Javascript there because the images are list item backgrounds only so I had to use an onclick event with location.replace(). That's serious and I'm going to work on it immediately.

Thanks you two for pointing that out. Smile

Gary: as I said, I have the images as backgrounds because I didn't want them to become buttons/image links in my html as they will not suit well with the other templates. But now, in light of your comments (along with Thomas's) I believe I'll be working on that soon enough.

Not wanting to rain on the parade, but I actually think I preferred your previous design (if I remember back that far correctly). Also, do you intend redesigning the inner pages to match the index cos I find the contrast a bit jarring at the moment?

It might be just me - in which case ignore the comment, but it irritated me that i couldn't click on the images above the link. I just 'expected' them to work - you know.

Not a major thing at all.

When i resize in FF the second upsize causes the
"www.abcruz.com your graphics, multimedia and web publishing partner." disappears behind the (non) navigation pics - maybe just pop it up a tad and that shouldn't happen?

On the third upsize your gallery and music links overlap
The text is pretty large by that point but just to make you aware

The last point, with my Javascript turned off i am stuffed! I don't get to see any of your subsections.

Apart from that the site is looking really nice mate ...good job

Hehehe, I've changed the design too often by now that I don't think I know which one you're referring to. But yes, I'm working on the other sections so they all match. Smile

You can view the site using other CSS in the templates sub-section. Cheers! Laughing out loud

Freddy: Thanks for noticing that top part. Yes, I'm aware of the title going under the images when you resize the text and I'll be working on those minor quirks when I've finished with the other sections. The javascript is something that I had to put in there because when I advertised in one of my mailing lists, interested people wanted to see a bit more "hocus pocus"-- you know, those people who think making an all-Flash site is way cool. It's a bit of a compromise for me really, as I noted in the index page.

Thanks again for your comments.

Hi guys, I'm sorry if I keep on bumping this thread. Laughing out loud

I'm redesigning my site now (a more "permanent" one for 2006) and this is what I currently have. Honestly, I think it sucks. But I've run out of ideas and don't know whether I should just try to improve this current design or to scrap it altogether.

It seems that for some pages, the layout is alright. But then, for pages with less content, I think it all breaks up. Any sort of opinion is welcome.

Again, the URL is http://www.abcruz.com

Thanks, have a nice day. Smile

Not liking the Flash navigation much, particularly the background image. I like the top left graphic and the rest of the layout is nice & neat but maybe lacking the flair of your first design.

New site version

Hi ABCruz

It's a nice looking site mate - but i have to agree with Tyssen on the Flash menu I'm afraid.

Personally, when i get to this stage, it pays to sit back - completely ignore your website until you get one of those ..."it should look like this" moments. There's nothing worse than fiddling and fiddling and coming up with designs you're not happy with.

Take a day or two away from it!

Good luck

Ya done good on the Flash menu in providing alternate content. I can navigate in Lynx. (Losing the Flash menu, though, would be a Good Thing®) You need to take one more step though. There are browsers that don't handle fail through on the object tag, and Firefox, for instance does not provide the alternate should Flash be turned off as opposed to not having the plugin installed.

Provide a simple inline list of links in the footer area. It may seem redundant, but it is nearly always a good plan to follow on any page.

I think you have an excellent design. It is pleasing to the eye and tells me a pro did this. I do think the content should be punched up with more strictly declarative sentences. The empty phrases like 'highest quality' should be removed.

I would edit the content like so:

“
*Welcome, Friend* [Welcome is never a good first word in a header, title or tag line.]

I'm Arielle Cruz, an independent multimedia artist from the Philippines, and this is my online portfolio. You will find samples of my work, descriptions of my services, poetry and prose, and music that I composed.

*Multimedia Artist At Your Service*

”

One more thing—lose the guestbook. That reeks of teeny-bopper mall rat, not an adult professional.

And one more thing again—did you notice the long dash in this and the previous paragraph? That's an em dash, — or —. Use that rather than a pair of hyphens, --.

cheers,

gary

I know it's been pointed out that the flash menu is maybe not the best idea - to which I agree. but if you must have it you should really make the words clickable as well - especially the back link. Even in the 3 minutes of browsing I got quite frustrated at constantly clicking it and nothing happening.

Also the highlighted CSS Creator bit (and the Imaginimage Studios bit) look like they are and probably should be links to the respective sites.

Oh and I missed the sections under home for a while (till Gary pointed out there was a guest book and I went looking for it). For some reason I did not think to click on home whilst I was on the home page. Maybe this should be expanded by default

That all said I do very much like the overall look.

Hello Gary and Briski,

Thanks for all your input. It's really helping a lot, especially Gary's opinion on the text. You guys are really so kind. Smile

I think I'll just remove the Flash completely so that I won't have to make a redundant set of links as Gary pointed out. But yeah, I did check it in Lynx first. Hehehe, amazing. But nah, it was just an experiment. Laughing out loud

The guestbook... hehehehe... I'll just see what I can do about that, I put that there due to "insistent public damand"-- exaggerating, of course.

Thanks again for your valuable insights!!! You all have a great day. Cheers! Smile

PS:
"Also the highlighted CSS Creator bit (and the Imaginimage Studios bit) look like they are and probably should be links to the respective sites. " -- Yes, boss. I'm definitely linking these references to their respective sites when I'm all done. Laughing out loud

Hello again. I just updated my design, I hope you guys have time for a second look.

I'm temporarily using Gary's text, for which I am very grateful, until I can come up with something else. I've also done away with the Flash and replaced the menu with some CSS techniques that I've learned over the past few months-- from CSS Creator, of course. Smile

The template still looks "candy-ish" but at least it's something I can work with. Hehehe... nevermind the face for now, it's just there as a space-filler. Laughing out loud

Have a good weekend everyone. Smile

Arielle, just had a very quick look at your latest version. think it's much improved, but I personally think you should lose the pic of yourself on the front page...it makes it look kinda amaturish, when you're trying to put accross professionalism.

also, the graphics on the top left...I see where you're going with it, but it's just not working for me. I think you need to think more about how you're going to integrate it with the right graphics and purple header.

sorry this is so quick, but did want to say it's coming along nicely.

Larmyia: hehehe, I'll be losing that pic. It's just there as a space filler. I'm planning to make a drawing, either in Photoshop or by hand, specifically for that space.

Top-left graphic? Hummm... I'll see what I can do about that. Maybe I work out the image I mentioned above to complement that top left thing because I like it as it is. But then again... Smile

By the way, may I know what browser/s you used, platform and resolution?

Hello, I just did another make-over for my site and I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions.

I'm particularly looking for ways to improve the right side section of the pages (in white). I seem to have run out of ideas for that part.
