Hey guys. I'm sure this has been asked before, but I really do ask:

Why isn't the avatar allowed to be larger than 6k? I mean, what about 10k? That is large enough that even the most intricate design in JPG format would still be small, if kept within the size restraints.

I ask because I help run a few boards, and wonder what the reasoning is behind it?

Can it really be that harmful to increase the allowed size of avatars to 10k?

Just wondering.

@Tony: If at all possible, could we get the sidebar that has all the info (like in the forum index) put on subsequent pages? Thanks.

~Brett

Well that's a question to addressed to Tony(forum owner/admin) isn't it really Brett, Is it really a problem can you not compress it one more kb ?
The size rule (I think that 6kb is the default setting and can be increased if needed)I guess is regulated so that the DB doesn't become bogged down with increasing member numbers.

Anyway this is a question for Tony really who may well have other matters occupying him at the moment.

Ah. See I didn't know Tony was the admin/owner of this. *Learns something new*

But really, it's not a personal preference, I'm just wondering where the 6kb came from (seeing as how I help run a few boards) and just want general input. Also, just seeing if other people would want a higher cap on the size of the images.

It's more of a general question, even though I probably wrote it as a request.

Hi Brett,
I think the default was less the 6k and I was feeling a little generous so changed it up to 6.

Really I prefer avatars and signatures to be as small as possible.
The bigger they get the slower they load.
if the avatar limit was increased to 10K that's an extra 4K to each post so on a page with 10 posts it makes another 40K. That's quite a significant size increase for the page and will slow the site down.

So no I am not going to increase the limit, you will have to learn to optimize your images. Shock

Isn't there something about avatar size and endowment? I thought I read that somewhere. Something about an inverse relationship . . .

Just kidding, of course. But then I am one of the only ones willing to show my face around here - part of it anyhow.

As Tony has pointed out a small increase in file size builds up when there are a few posts to be loaded it's slow for us and bandwidth soaking for Tony.

To be honest I'm in favour of keeping images to the absolute minium in terms of file size /quantity as I find that they tend to just be a distraction especially animated ones ( thinks about some recent animated smilies)

I've also noticed a propensity for people recently to embed really large horrendously slow loading screen shots this makes viewing a post somewhat tedious.
Could people reduce the size of these graphics and optimize the file size if they really feel the need to post them.

Whilst on the subject of forum graphics... Brett - why do you feel the need to advertise the fact that you moderate and sponsor other forums?

I'm not advertising. It's a way of giving people that care to look at it a little more insight as to what I do in my spare time. My sig is like my Boy Scout uniform, it's my way to give achievements without having to always be thought of giving my resume.

This was just meant to give me an idea of why, it has answered that question. Thanks.

Why should it? My avatars, for example, are mostly below 2K - the largest being 6.5K - with 130x150px.

As has been said, large avatars make loading slow - as do large sigpics.
