Hi All

I've just completed a couple of sites and would be interested to hear what you think - good, bad or otherwise.

The first is a site for a photography studio. It's at http://www.mc-photo-studio.com

The second is one I put together for my wife at http://www.kaboodlecolour.co.uk

All views welcome!

Thanks.

Roy

A couple of sites: would like your views

Hi,

I'm sort of busy at the moment, but will comment on the second link:

http://www.kaboodlecolour.co.uk

I like the overall look and color usage but think the viewable content width should be wider. It gets sort tedious having to scroll down all the time when there isn't that much to read on the page. Having a small amount of content isn't a bad thing necessarily, but it should be as readable as possible without sacrificing artistic integrity. The other thing that bothered me somewhat was the look of the hdr_bg class. I don't think the background, font-family, or font size really works here. Possibly look into dynamic text replacement for this as you can then use any font you want to--not just the web-safe variety.

Finally, I think a lighter border color for the right-hand side content would be an improvement over the black. The navigation looks very good, though, and I think you're quite close to being done here.

Thanks Andrew!

I take what you say about the width. I designed the site to sort of reflect the flyer I had done some time ago (1/3 European A4 portrait). Perhaps extending the content block by 50 or so pixels will make a difference?

Also, the heading with background - I had reservations to0 (again, this reflected the style of the flyer). Will read that link and see if there's anything I can glean.

The border looks ok in a light grey so that one is plain sailing!

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated!

I just wanted to say that I really liked your photo site. I thought the use of space and colour was fantastic and I liked your menus too. you've kept it simple which displays the photos at their best.

Just a coupla quickies

For the .hdr_bg class - repeat the bg - it really doesn't look that bad if it repeats and is a whole lot better than getting white text on white if the user font-size exceeds the bg image dimension.

I agree that the site is a bit narrow and I find the body text to be a tad too small - unless you intend people to be viewing it on PDAs Laughing out loud

i second what everyone has said.
on the k-color i would probably make each hover a different color in the nav. and then carry that to the different section. it is a color site after all.

Second one

One the second one I agree about not wanting to scroll down. I'd say just make the whole content area a fixed with and have it scroll like an iframe. Sometimes adding a nice looking scrollbar in places like that can improve the look of your site. Just my opinion, shoot it down if you want.

I may be different... but you are all the same.

WRT: Kaboodle

Overall I like the look and feel of the site.

On the issue of width, the days of having to cater for 600px displays are thankfully all but gone now. 760px width is a good size to go for if you wish to fix the width and still look good on a 800px monitor. I see no reason why you shouldn't go for a narrow format if you really want to, but in this case I agree that it just doesn't look right.

On the colour issue, I think you have managed to achieve a strong brand image through very minimal use of colour (well done), but this will be diluted if you use different colours on every page. Stick with the pink to reinforce the brand.

The body text size is way too small on my hi-res monitor, and you have used pixels to size the text so people with IE will not be able to scale it. This is a serious accessibility drawback.

To be consistent with most other websites on the net, your main trading identifier should also serve as a link to the home page.

You have a gift voucher promotion but you don't tell or help people to buy the vouchers on that particular page. Phone number? Web form?

You show prices (which is good) but it wouldn't hurt to say that they include VAT (e.g. near the foot of the page).

You miss-spell the word caboodle but you do not allow for people telling others about the website address. caboodlecolour.co.uk is available - you should buy it and point it at the same vhost Wink

There is room for efficiency with your CSS code. For example this:

padding-right: 0px;
padding-left: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;

...can also be written as this:

padding: 0 0 0 0;

Well done - hope that helps Smile

Wow! Been away for a few days and didn't think anything would have been added to this thread.

Thankyou all for your very helpful and extremely constructive input. I think I'll widen the 2nd site's content area, that's easy.

Roytheboy, on the font size issue, would points or ems be your preference?

Thanks again everyone. Really appreciate.

Or the ultimate in efficiency: padding:0;

The shorthand rules for block outer dimensions (margins|borders|padding) are . . .
Where four dimensions are specified - property:top right bottom left;
Where three dimensions are specified - property:top [right and left] bottom;
Where two dimensions are specified - property:[top and bottom] [right and left];

Learn CSS shorthand - it makes your code more compact and easier to edit. Here is a site with a quick rundown on the various properties that can be "shorthanded" http://www.webcredible.co.uk/user-friendly-resources/css/css-shorthand-properties.shtml

As for the padding: 0; ... #-o How could I be so stupid to use four zeros! Sorry, I was obviously having a moment of madness as I do know to use only one zero ...honest :oops: Laughing out loud

The photography site looks excellent
Clean, spacious and it really displays (shows off) the photos well.

For kaboodle, i agree with the other comments here - it's too thin.
Adding to the width would really improve the layout and make it easier to 'flick through'

imho
