Hi!
I wonder if anyone knows of stats about wich window mode people use when they are on the web (maximized window, fullscreen, standard...). All i know is that it differs between PC and Mac since Mac doesn't have any maximizing (that (+) button is just crap if you ask me...)

PC 4ever... No, seriously, I'm a loveful macfan (i've got two myself) but I know better than going all "You-only-need-one-mousebutton-blabla"... I just wished i could maximize Safari without using javascript...
But window-mode-stats would be useful, since some 1240x1024-user never use the whole screen for the browser. Hence, resolution stats might not be that reliable.

I do not know what others use, but I surf at 800 by 600.
I am 51 and need to use reading glasses to see that!
When I go to friends houses they have nice big monitors but have the resolution so high that they have to get inches away to try to read tiny text. When I got a bigger monitor it was to help seeing what was there , NOT to fit more tiny stuff on the screen that I could not see.

Excellent point there, Douglas. This is something many designers forget... i guess it has something to do with the average age of web designers

For the record, I use 1024x768, 100hz, windows XP, startbar minimized, standard maximised mozilla firefox window with SkinPlant theme - small buttons, search on same toolbar as buttons, and the bookmarks toolbar up.
I get a viewport height of about 600 pixels (with tabs), about 622 without tabs.

We should also remember people browse with toolbars open down the side.
Many people open up the favorites in IE by mistake and never work out how to get rid of it.
For stats on screen resolution try http://www.appcreator.com/webstats.php although like mentioned above browser windows may not be maximized.
My browser is usually maximized except when testing.

Do you really need to know this, if you make sure that your web site looks fine on 800x600 then it will be accessible to the vast majority of people.
just test it on lots of resolutions and try opening a few toolbars etc. to see if it works
I think it is much more reliable to rely on solid testing than on stats which are sketchy at best.
I don't mean to come across as sounding nasty : -- )

in FF i tend to keep it maximised but IE i keep the windows tiled. (tab feature def. is a good one) plus since im a mac guy im not really fond of maximising anything except photoshop when on PC.
what this isnt an IE-bashing thread? =]

I use a liquid layout for my site. I like my page to look fine with different screen sizes. I use both 800x600 and 1024x768 for browsing pages. For testing my designs I also use the 640x480 display size.

I recently asked a similar question in CSS layouts. Around 47% of people surf at 800X600 and 44% surf at 1024X768. Some people still use 640x480 and a few, including myself use a greater resolution. I don't know how many people surf maximized, in a small window, or full screened but I hope these resolution stats can help you.

I have 2 21" monitors running 1280x960 and always browse maximised on a single monitor. My taskbar is double height (windows 2000).
