This is as off-topic as one can get:

I spilled grape juice on my Dell 600m laptop... all over it. The same laptop that is supposed to last me until I graduate in 2008... Eek! You can imagine what kind of shock this puts a computer engineer through.

Fortunately, now I just let it sit overnight and now all I have to deal with are keys that require 50 newtons of force to press. Pity me!

Reminds me of a former boss who set his laptop down next to his bed only to wake up the next morning and step on it, cracking the LCD. It worked fine of course, hooked up to an external monitor...

Any designers here use laptops, or do you go for the regular desktop with a nice big screen? And do you prefer LCDs or CRTs (supposing you have the space to spare)?

Spilling grape juice

Given that I sit in front of my pooter more hours than not, I use a desktop Mac with two monitors set next to each other: a 21inch LCD (for all my email and web monitoring displays) and a 21inch CRT (for design and colour balancing work). It's the best of both worlds but given that both monitors are supposed to be amongst the best of their type, it's amazing how different some colours can be from one monitor to the other. LCDs have got a long way to go yet if you need to work with accurate colour!

I also have a PC + CRT for checking websites but the (standard) gamma setting on that makes all the pictures seem so dark that I have to bear that in mind when I'm optimising my web pictures.

Life's a b*tch and then you die!

Spilling grape juice

.. Can i have your money?

Tongue

I've got my regular PC with a 17" CRT monitor. It's fine for what i'm using it for.

I'm looking at getting a 15" Powerbook for my multimedia needs and it will be an added bonus to be able check my websites across the mac browsers. The main reason i want A laptop, is so i don't have my clients coming to my house all the time ..

I am Dan, Dan I am.

If my well-established firm couldn't afford to buy me a decent pooter and monitors then I'd get out of the business that I'm in and do something else!

Spilling grape juice

Doing everything on a 15.2" powerBook. Which I bought with my own savings 2.5 years ago. It's doing well, the only thing I really miss is a big monitor.

Speaking of spilling. My sister spillt a boiling cup of tea w. lots of sugar into her laptop a few years ago. After miraculsly getting it services for free 5-10 times she's still using it. Well, sort of. She hasn't got a new one is the right wording I guess.

While I'm not exactly a designer, more of a it-allrounder, I have a couple of computers hanging on the internet... a laptop, 6 pcs, 1 imac (which is in repair for quite some time now), 1 clie, 1 playstation 2... Smile

I mostly do my stuff on a windows xp pc with a 17 inch flatscreen, still I like to work on my linux server (15 inch flatscreen) and linux workstation (17 inch crt + 14 inch terminal) as well.

I don't work too much on my laptop, as it's too small (12 inch). Still, it's perfect for study or when visiting friends and working for excercises. I also like to look up stuff at university (wlan almost everywhere) on my clie handheld. Pitty, that some site don't work at all with it...
