As I work my way through the development of my first truly standards compliant XHTML/CSS web system, I have come up against a huge wall of a problem.

How the f*** do you embed an mpeg movie such that it can be viewed in all modern browsers and still be standards compliant? If you nestle an <embed> tag within an <object> tag it doesn't validate (I work to XHTML transitional), and using the Satay hack ( http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flashsatay/ ) seems a bit extreme for simple mpegs.

I don't get too involved with movies, but enough to want to do this properly. I like to offer visitors choice, so I give them download links for Mac or PC, file sizes for DSL or 56k, and an embedded page for those who don't like to download. How do you display embedded mpegs and does your code validate?

embeding mpeg movies

Thanks for the link Smile . I hadn't thought of writing my own custom DTD and I'm not sure that I even want to try, but I did ask !

I'll read all the references and post back if I come to any useful conclusions.
