Hello,

I'm still in the design phase. This still has a long ways to go, it is looking to cluttered right now, and just not clean enough.

Ephasis is to be placed on 1) The daily top news item in the top left 2) Sponsor logo integration 3) Customizability (my USEF stuff) 4) Fast load times for dial up users

The following link takes you to a large JPEG of the layout, still in progress. Any feedback is welcome. Looking for ideas on tightening up the design, and just some general feedback on the layout. Site users are mosly older people involved in the Equestrian sports.

Thanks,
Sledge

Site Check for USEF

As you say at the moment a rather busy design, too much for the eye to take in, to focus on. If you can I would try to make the right column a tad smaller as it tends to swamp things the only bit of copy/content is a bit lost, but the design looks very profesional on the surface difficult to comment much further on an image esp regards dial up speed.

Thanks for the feedback. I might make the right column smaller, but haven't done so yet. I think this revision is heading in the right direction:

Yes I prefer the direction the second one is going in, the menu items are easier to read. Still think it's a tad on the wide side though Smile

I agree. I've gone three steps further in adjustments, including making the right col narrower and the main col wider. Let me know what you think. Anybody else out there, feedback is appreciated.

Why? It's called a comp or thumbnail, pretty standard technique in design layout. They've been critiqued for decades.

Once the design is complete, then I will start coding. It would be very inefficient to code a rough draft, as it is much easier to adjust things in an image. My design process starts with pencil and paper, then moves to a layout/design program in the computer, and then moves to actual coding.

What am asking for in critique here, is on the design. The elements of design. The layout. The flow. Etc. I'm not asking you to critique the CSS yet, I haven't got to that yet. Smile But it will come soon, I hope. And I'll need some critique on that as well!

whoa sledge... no need to get testy Smile can't comment on load times using an image LOL
so... comments on the design...
Left column is fine...what is more important in your mind.. the middle or right column?... which ever it is needs to be the largest.. IMHO
Logo and sponsorship integration:
The Nextel add in the header really distracts from the USEF logo.. can it be made smaller or moved to a different location? The way all your adds are displayed now takes away from the purpose of the site, again IMHO... but I assume the site is supposed to be about the USEF and not about your sponsors... move the adds to the bottom of the layout or put them on a separate page if possible...
How about a border around the entire setup to enclose everything?

Good suggestions. Unfortunately, about the sponsor logos... well, if marketing had their way completely, the whole front page would be a billboard. They are really pushing for sponsor placement throughout the homepage. I'll post some revisions up later today. Thanks.
