Much as I like Firefox as a browser, I run into trouble programming for it. Here's a tutorial from CSS:The Missing Manual. It should render all text in sans-serif, and does so in IE7 -- but not in Firefox.

What am I missing?

Inheritance in Action

p {
color: #5f9794;
margin-left:50px;
}
.pageStyle {
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 1em;
color: red;
}

Works fine for Deuce

The plot thickens! As it's just a tutorial, I haven't published it to the Web. I'll try that. But I've been having trouble with centered text, too. Comes off left-justified in Firefox.

Could I have something messed up in my Firefox?

...but not for me!

OK, I published the page:

In IE7 I see sans-serif type, but not in Firefox.

My guess is that your local copy of Firefox is probably set to use a serif font for proportional text. That will over-ride anything your CSS tells it.

The truth is that you cannot force your font choice onto the end user. No matter what you do if I want to make my browser base font a serif font that is what I will see, and if that breaks your design it is your design that is at fault.

The web is not paper. It is flexible, not fixed, and the visitor is always in control if they desire to be. You can't give orders, you can only make suggestions.

Local setting?

That makes sense, Ed. Esp. after Deuce posts his screen shot. Now, where is that setting?

Local setting!

Under "Content" there is a default font setting. Mine was on Times New Roman. I changed it to Arial, and now everything is sans serif! Even the NY Times isn't in TNR.

That can't be right either. I'm confused.

In the content tab in

In the content tab in options click on "advanced" and select the serif, sans serif, and Monospace fonts you prefer. Decide which you want for proportional fonts, serif or sans-serif and set the "Proportional" button to the default you want. Then if you want remote pages to use their font families, tick the "Allow pages to use their own fonts" checkbox.

But remember most browsers will allow your visitors to override any fonts you set and design with that in mind.

Bingo!

That's what I was looking for, Ed.

I realize I can't control your browser, but I ought to be able to control mine!

Right. On the web ultimate control belongs to the guy with the browser.
