Hi guys,

I'd like to borrow a moment of your time to get your advice on the layout of my site, http://pranshuarya.com. I'm not much of a designer so my main questions are:

Is it visually appealing?
Is the JavaScript good for usability or does it hinder it?

(The site validates for CSS, and all except one HTML validation errors are from a PHP slideshow script I have embedded in an iframe.)

Thanks a lot,
Precar.

"You cant handle the truth !"

well, you asked for it, get ready.

I'll start with code.

1. You already know this, but validation red is ungly. We like validation green !

2. You should do more work with the SOE. At least do the following.

<meta name="description" content="<span style="font-weight:bold">data goes here</span>" />
<meta name="keywords" content="<span style="font-weight:bold">data goes here</span>" />

Also, you title isnt SOE friendly.

3. Why are you mixing style with content? see below...

<body style="color: #C0C0C0; margin: 0; background-color: #000000;">

CSS was created to keep this from happening. You should avoid doing this.

4. You dont need this many divs to achieve what you want. You dont need a div for everything you want to style. Group similar elemets into divs, then style the elements. This looks like a huge HTML table, but with divs.

5. position: absolute; should be avoided. Absolute works best if it's inside a relatively positioned parent. This just throws off your layout with different screen rezes, or window sizing.

6. i dont see any tags anywhere... not good.

7. I think you have way to much JS in there.

8. CSS. Watch those font faces. These will not show up unless the user has them insyalled on thier local machine. They didnt show up on mine. Again, too much absolute positioning.

okay, now style

1. Too much black.

2. This menu sucks in every way.

3. page loads super slow.

4. You should do some research into grid layouts.

5. i dont know, I would just start over with a whole new design. Remember, content before style.

Thanks

I was expecting it, so thanks for the detailed comments.

I've got the meta tags in there, and see them in the rendered code, but I noticed the same SEO error when I tested it. Any suggestions for why that might be happening?

I'll move the body styling to the stylesheet.

The reason I had to do so many divs was of the iframes, which are deprecated I know, but I read the object attribute isn't fully supported yet.

Modifications

Alright, thanks to your pointers I've made some modifications:

*changed to a grid-like layout for more natural navigation
*reduced number of absolutely positioned elements
    *switched to web-safe fonts

I'd like to keep the color scheme for now, until I develop something better. But in terms of usability, do you consider it an improvement over before?

I didn't see it before, but if you wanted to design a site to drive me away immediately never to return that's a good approach. Ow!

Right now, for me, it's completely unusable.

What is it?

Is it too much black? Or the JavaScript?

I just wanted to try something different than the common layout (which I'm already doing on my WordPress and Joomla sites).

I know the common layout is common for a reason, but it'd be great to know what specifically drives you away from this design so I can learn and move on.

Thanks.

All that stuff moving about the screen! If I want to view your pictures I will click a link to them. Your color scheme also drives me away, I hate black or mostly black sites.

Reread your first sentence above, then think about it for awhile. Yes, there is a reason for most common layouts. But you can still be quite creative within those constraints. In fact all real creativity is exercised within constraints because there is never any unconstrained freedom. Accepting the constraits of the medium you are working in doesn't prevent creativity.

In general people want to be in control of their browsing experience and if you take away a level of control they will generally exercise the control they have that you can't take away, namely their "back" or "home" buttons.

If I want a visual experience I can't control I'll go to a movie.
At least I then know I can't control it (except by leaving of course) before I go in.

Don't make your web site do things I can't control.

Thanks

You're right, I also like to have control when I'm browsing a website, and it's quite a turnoff for me when I don't have that control.

I'm glad I posted here for feedback.
