Well I think it's cooked. So let me know what I've missed/could improve please...
Amazing considering only
Amazing considering only your second real complete site. You did dun well!
Couple of points on a slight SEO kick:
Headings: these are not really the best use of the primary h1 and secondary h2 tag from both a document outline point of view and a search engine one. The value of the tags in both respects is slightly lost, in future it will be better to use these tags with unique page content to both outline the document and provide meaningful content that google will appreciate and reward you for, and on that note you might as well make use of the google will make use of this data and it will improve the search result display.

Aaaaw thanks Hugo It's all due to my mentors and helpers here and your continued encouragement (so take a bow!).
Let's face it, this was a pretty simple exercise and I really didn't change much from the original site except to give it a more cohesive look. But I think it works - it's pretty rustic after all! And I learnt that Gary's lesson on Blockquote belongs with your lesson on hr - they won't take classes, but can be styled in their own right.
As for the SEO comments - I agree. I'm not sure how I could make the h2s better but I did actually start to play with the "descriptions" last night and wondered how/whether I should try and make them more descriptive of the information on each page. You convinced me Are we "in synch" or what?
I initialized the tracker last night so to get it up and live, all I do is put it on a usb and give it to Deb tell her to rename the existing folder and put this in it's place, right?
You may thnk it not changed
You may thnk it not changed much but it is a solid example of a good conversion from a table based error riden layout to a CSS-P semantic, error free set of pages.
Gary's pullquotes were worthy of being placed in the 'How To' as a little mini tut
Not sure what the 'tracker' refers to (probably missed earlier mention of it, presume it's analytics?) can you expand on what you have and where you think it needs to go?
Well I guess it has changed
Well I guess it has changed now you mention it
And yes, Gary's Pullquote was beautiful (I'm not sure I shouldn't try and make it a little greener/darker though?)- and blockquotes brilliantly explained on his own site. Gotta give a plug where one is earned!
Not sure what the 'tracker' refers to (probably missed earlier mention of it, presume it's analytics?)
'Tis indeed Analytics. I followed Gary's earlier advice and opened an account there and had a choice of .ur or .ga - so I took the .ga code and put it on the bottom of all my pages before the tag as instructed. I checked earlier tonight and it's working!
<script type="text/javascript"> var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www."); document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E")); </script> <script type="text/javascript"> var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-4918306-2"); pageTracker._initData(); pageTracker._trackPageview(); </script>
So I gather that I will have to open an account for Deb and put her account number in the code. The Bakehouse actually achieves about 70% occupancy apparently, so it would be good for her to see if people do visit her site or whether they just go to and book through her listing at the Visitors' Centre.
I will also need to take out the "no follow" meta tag for the search engines to index the site, and take the robots file out of the BB directory.
Then it should just be a case of Deb replacing her current BB directory with this one - yes?
Does the site architecture
Does the site architecture match 1:1? If so, yes. If there are path or name changes, you'll have to deal with those. Don't break peoples' bookmarks or Google et al's indexes.
Thanks for the nice words.
cheers,
gary
Aah...um. I don't know. I
Aah...um. I don't know. I did think about the path names though, so that's another reminder and hopefully they will match.
Thanks for the nice words.
Entirely deserved - I even (sort of) understood most of it!
