Well I've finally redone all the pics on BB - but I'm not sure what's going on with the LB. The "loading" gif isn't moving anymore and sometimes the bottom title bit isn't as wide as the pic. The "next" and "prev" tabs also have been appearing quite a bit in from the edge.

Would someone kindly do a check for me to see if this appears on your system(Drunk or if it is in fact okay. Thank you as always Smile

Your lightboxes appear fine

Your lightboxes appear fine on my FF!

Hmm interesting just checking in IE7 and I've got the alert "you are about to view pages over a secure connection" again on page entry and on hover of main links (no click)

It seems that problem is not server related. I have tested to access all your sites via my IE7. Problem doesn't persist on my end.

I think that they are not

I think that they are not understanding the question, which was what is that url? regardless how is it not a server problem? I wouldn't Place too much energy into this though as it's simply a test account for your purposes.

I understand. Annoying nonetheless.

However, let me clarify something....

...when I clicked that link it didn't load, so I put in the extra 'e' https://cp.freehostia.com/404/ and got the "not found on this server" (which is what I thought you were referring to) and sent that to FHS. How did you tie this to the BB menu problem? Anything I can report back to FHS?

I can't pin this down and

I can't pin this down and feel I ought to able and am missing something.

The bad request is due to an attempt to locate an object /404/ which clearly doesn't exist as either a file or folder, when I check the response headers they tell me that the referer (when making a request 'get' to a web server the referer is sent along with the request, referer means the page or object that is making the request, i,e when we initially view your site, and check the response headers from the server it will report csscreator/node/etc as being the originating source) is your main css file, what I don't understand is why the error response is https. Under normal circs this passes unnoticed as such, IE on the other hand sees the secure http response and throws up a general caution dialogue.

If they had a notion to freehostia could examine logs to determine what was happening but it's unlikely they would want to or indeed have the time?

Done deal-- this is my last reply to this forum.

I find it appalling that the list darling gets pampered with infinite patience when the solution to the issue is common sense. In the meantime, those who have "real" issues rarely get real answers. And those who try to provide real answers pose a threat to the establishment.

Thanks for the fuller explanation - I'll ask one more time to see if they come up with anything else. Otherwise, as you say, it will probably sort itself out when BB gets to its proper home, but it never will if I don't get back to the remaining problems! Smile

[OT] Forum protocols and ettiquette

David, the real issue isn't simply this post. If it were, your contribution would have simply been ignored as unimportant. This is only one of a number of such superfluous, irritating posts. In only a month's participation, the several unhelpful posts have perceptually overwhelmed the many very helpful posts. Look at these from just the last few days:

  • Anothe horizontal parent child submenu align question
    Quote:

You might get an answer a lot faster by simply providing a clickable link to the page. Some of us would like to spend time problem solving, rather than wasting time re-building your page from snippets of what you think may be important.

That is highly true, but that's a snotty way of putting it.

After the OP put up a link, I didn't see any effort on your part to fix the problem.

  • small line break (OK in IE7, FF, Safari but not in IE6)
    Quote:

    Hugo wrote:

Take your protein pill, put your helmet on...
    Ground Control, Huston

As did Hugo, I can only think, "What the hell?"

  • Ok...

Not needed or necessary. Probably just sort of wing it. You know, kinda like make up the markup based on the CSS sort of experience.

    I'll be back...

    Arnold

You needed the sarcasm with a first time poster, why?

  • Padding problem I.E and background problem in FF
    Quote:

Can you provide a clickable link to the page? It gets tiresome on this forum trying to build pages, when they can be worked on "live," or easily downloaded with images and all else intact given a URI.

This was a first time poster who had done an excellent job of describing the problem, posting his source and making the images available. He has all that we ask including a descriptive subject line. We do not require a link, helpful though it is. One of the most prestigious forums does not allow links due to their temporary nature.

In an ideal world, everyone would have a descriptive subject line, would have created a minimal test case with the css embedded in the head, and required images attached, and would have posted a link to the full misbehaving page. That ain't happening—not often, anyway. We are perfectly happy then, to get the source and images. Your "It gets tiresome on this forum trying to build pages, …" is a bit presumptuous given your short tenure here and our posting rules.

  • Then, there is this thread's comment. It's as if someone were getting their carburetor rebuilt and a kibitzer says, "forget that trash, get a new car with fuel injection." That would certainly eliminate the problem of bad transportation, but may not be desirable for whatever reasons. It is certainly not germane to the issue at hand, fixing the carburetor. Nor, was your "Get a life. Get a host/server."

I thought Smee was being very restrained and polite. Your reaction is certainly extreme. By "list darling", do you mean Smee? I suppose she is a favorite, but she's earned the sobriquet. She came here knowing next to nothing about html or css, seeking out the right way to do things. She took each suggestion, applied it as best she could and came back for explanations of why such and such was done. She obviously tries very hard to understand what she's doing. Anyone helping her knows she will be diligent in her responses, and the ones who aid her can take pride in their parts of the process. So, yeah, she's a favorite and receives more than average attention. (Aside to Vickie: Don't get a big head. Even teacher's pet can earn a flame. Wink)

I don't know what you mean, "… those who have 'real' issues rarely get real answers." Please supply an example. I will confess to giving short shrift to those whom I give a suggestion, and they respond with "that won't/didn't work", especially since I test my suggestions before offering, and if I don't, I say so.

If I'm a member of the establishment, and I suppose being a moderator here qualifies, show me an example or two of those "real answers". I'll get back to you on whether I feel threatened. To my knowledge, the only complaint has been that your snide, sarcastic and sometimes totally abstruse comments border on being caustic, which no one feels good about.

We, Tony, the moderators and myself, try very hard to encourage a professional demeanor in the forum. That does not mean all is warm and fuzzy. It does mean we don't take being called out on a personal basis. If you're wrong, you say oops and move on. If you're right, you state your case and offer evidence in your behalf. We haven't had major flame wars, but we've had some serious debates. Sometimes minds change, sometimes they don't. Either way, we all benefit from the exchange of logical and objective ideas. Hell, even I was on the wrong side once. It was painful, given my ossified state of mind. Tongue

David, you seem to be a bright guy and pretty much know your stuff. I'd hate to lose your input over a snit. Please take a moment or two to think things over, and return to the fold.

cheers,

gary

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

I wouldn't dare, I've seen you lot in action! Tongue
I count myself fortunate that my questions get answers. I try not to take advantage of the fact that people keep an eye out for me. I also know it's because my 'history' here has shown I'm a trier and that is one of the things the regulars value.

@David: I agree. While it's not acceptable to belittle posters, good advice is always welcome. However, people being who they are, it will always be the case that some will take one's advice, some will discard it and some will come back to it later as a good idea when they understand it.
