i'm at a loss here... i coded indieshark.com and tested it in safari -- and it looks beautiful. i looked at it in IE (mac and pc) and it completely fell apart. so i spent a few hours debugging... and it's led me to a bafflingly dead end. turns out i can't even get IE to accept a background image if i do this: <body background="images/bluewhite2.gif"> let alone include it in the stylesheet. what could possibly be going on here? if you could take a look at indieshark.com and offer me any advice here, i'd be most grateful... this is a significant roadblock for me! i can't very well expect all of my viewers to be using safari, can i?
thanks in advance...

baffled by background images in IE

Ok two problems here, first you need a doctype.. you can use any of the following:

XHTML 1.0 Transitional:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

OR

XHTML 1.0 Strict:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
Just paste one of these before the <html> tag.

Then you need a character set, something like:
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
should do. just paste it inside your <head> tag

Once all that is done, head over to http://validator.w3.org/ to validate your code

i only see one image show up no matter what browser i sue:
http://indieshark.com/images/me.gif

check your paths, names, all that good stuff. Check your file names - if you've saved/exported them back and forth between Mac and PC apps sometimes one or the other will append a new extension and you'll be scratching your head for a good long time because your file may say "shark.gif" but if you check the properties it may actually be "shark.gif.jpg" .

still not working....

thanks for your help - i should have added those before uploading, but unfortunately it hasn't solved my problem... in the validator i'm getting a bunch of silly little errors, like not specifying "alt" for my images and that sort of thing. i doubt that's why my backgrounds aren't working -- and why would some of my backgrounds work and not others? it doesn't make any sense to me. there's no difference in how i'm specifying one background and the next, so i don't understand why, for example, the background on the bottom of my page works, but the page background doesn't and the header background doesn't.

as soon as it all becomes 100% compliant, you can start questioning the actual css.. I think you should make it compliant, it makes things much easier

The image found at:

http://indieshark.com/images/bluewhite2.gif

Does not exist. Check your file path.

I am going to be attending The Ohio State University this fall as an incoming freshman, majoring in Computer Science and Engineering.

Go Bucks!

your images all show up now as far as I can tell, but it is broken in IE6. you need "text-align: center" for PC users, i think on the BODY would fix #topbar and #content
