Hi,

I am new to this site, so please be kind! I have prepared an email template in HTML to be sent via Outlook. It is a very simple design using CSS and tables (I know, I know, but it was required due to the quirks of different email readers etc.)

It all works fine except for one major issue - when there is no text in the template, the expandable cells across the top and bottom borders loses their backgrounds. It occurs ONLY when the text goes as far as these cells across the page.

I have uploaded two examples for you to check out:

Working fine: www.parishcouncil.net/email/email.html

NOT working: www.parishcouncil.net/email/email2.html

I would really appreciate some feedback on what CSS errors I have made. I know that there are lots of things that I could do to make this a better template, but I only really want advice on what needs to be done to make it work.

Many thanks,
Neil

Hi. I'm actually testing it

Hi. I'm actually testing it in IE7. I did notice that it is fine in FF2, but of course my Outlook html viewer (and most email recipients) is IE6/7.

Thanks.

Hi All, I have just noticed

Hi All,

I have just noticed that I have the 'OK' and 'Broken' HTML files the wrong way around! I am sure that you can work it out though - the broken one is the one with white-space instead of the border in the template (email.html file). Also, for clarification it is ONLY an issue in IE7.

Thanks,
Neil

OK - through playing around

OK - through playing around with the code, I have managed to identify WHERE the problem is, but still now WHAT it is:

When the paragraph in the BODY_CONTENT cell gets to the point where it hits the TOP_BODY cell, the background for the TOP_BODY cell disappears. I think it is something to do with the colspan="2", though I cannot for the life of me work out what. I say this because I tried it with all four cells (i.e. all the paragraph content squashed into the right-hand side of the page), and this works fine, and retains the background of TOP_BODY. So, if anyone out there can answer the unanswerable - I am keenly waiting!!

ps. A reminder of the pages:
