Well the default template for Wordpress is basically a dogs dinner thats why; the code for the blog is great but it beggers belief that they could have released a broken layout in this way, you just have to follow the posts on the WP support forum to see the absolute fiasco that is happening, talk about flame war! I have followed the arguments over the CSS design for a couple of weeks now and am not impressed .
But to offer some advice rather than fly of topic the original problem with the default style was a lack of understanding about clearing floats and how to position footers I see that you have the menu as absolute which is why you will always have a problem as the content for it is dynamic and will grow you would be better of setting it to float then you can clear it .
I see that you have hacked the index.php around as this was the other problem that the markup was not correct so you shouldn't have too much trouble changing things, if you do there are a number of people who reckon that they have working layouts for download but it requires a hacked index.php one guy that has a few is root at http://www.atthe404.com/blog/
If you go down the float route youself this link may well help
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/negativemargins/
if none of that was any help or you are still having problems post back as I am trying to construct a fluid 2 col layout at the moment

what you will need to do is to set the content to float:left with a negative right margin the width of the menu to create the space for the menu; the menu set to float:right and a clearing div or clearfix rule to expand the wrapper or container that holds both and height:100% on the html, body and height:auto for mozilla. this is a tricky layout made no easier by the nature of the blog index.php/code I'm not going to pretend that it won't be a bit frustrating to implement but it is the only way I can see of working with a blogs dynamic sizing.

Best advise is to follow the article I linked to at ALA 'negative margins'
If you follow it you shouldn't go far wrong and you have a nice step by step guide to reference but obviously work on a copy of the index.php/stylesheet .

Hope that's some help, give it a go and let us know how you get on if you run into any problems I should be able to help further.

I also noticed that the grey bar at the bottom of the menu extends over past the right column into the left column in IE, but not in Firefox. Any idea on how to fix that? It shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Hm not sure off hand other than to say that IE is shifting the menu position to the left slightly and that it isn't actualy being constrained in it's position, if you narrow the browser the menu drifts across the content. You could try using the universal selector rule to feed IE only rules in the form of * html #menu{} and then play around with the positioning but I think that it is another good reason to change over to a floated column layout also you may need to think of using the faux column trick for creating the illusion of equal columns at,

Welcome to the forum Root,

Nice to see you here, I've been following the conflict between the wordpress team and yourself with some amusement and a lot of horror. I've found it incredible that there has been so much strife over a relatively simple area as layout! there are probably any number of people on this forum that could put together a working layout for WP in their sleep and as for that AK layout competition farse ???. I find that I am rather put off WP by the whole debacle and may have a look at Textpattern as an alternative, I can't help but think that WP is heading for collapse as a project, I doubt a 19 year old can hold it together.
If your layouts are stable and your going to leave the links up I'll refer anyone with problems your way I had half a mind to post a working fixed layout on the support forum but decided against it when I saw how many people were posting up broken layouts I can't believe that they allow that to happen it just causes further confusion and support problems, why can't they appoint someone to check the layouts out and then post them in a central repository, but I'm forgetting that the WP team seem to have very little HTML/CSS experience although I thought that Dave Shea had, just goes to show...

On a side note I think that you upset Eric Meyer with your public comments, I saw that his layout was broken probably around the same time as you did and was a little supprised to see your post and thought His reply was justified , all in all a wee bit naughty. Smile
it's not for me to say but maybe a small apology Wink
