I am looking to make some icons and looking for appropriate software to make them. Has anyone come across some freebee icon making software ?

I checked out Nonags.com (an excellent freeware site, HIGHLY recommended) and found IconArt, which received the highest rating at Nonags possible.
For other icon editors, look in Nonags under Graphics/ Graphics Tools (I suggest you only consider software with a rating of 5 or 6).
Good luck- let me know your opinion of IconArt, I might be needing an icon editor as well.

coffeecup software do a free icon editor.
icons are just bmps with extension .ico ..... so just save it out from your favourite editor as bmp and manually change the extension.
(not 100% sure about this re macs but works fine on windows).

on the other side, even irfanview saves BMP files as ICO files. Works fine for me if you see the favicon on my home page.
