the floated container drops past the bottom of page...I have done searches for the solution and found :after, but can't wrap my head around it...very confusing.

They all work most of the time, which is why I posted the link. The best option to use depends upon circumstances and personal preference, sometimes based (in my case) upon years of habit when not all the options were known about.

As Roy says they all work most of the time , the thing with float containment is that you must understand and be ready to swap the options as they each may have problems given certain conditions.
I just pointed out option 2 second link as it was linking back here to Tony's solution that has widespread adoption as one of the approaches that works and is useful to keep ready at the bottom of your styles.
