Hi all. I'm new to your forum, but I have a pretty tough problem on my hands, so I hope you can help.

For reasons outside my control, I cannot use the HTML/CSS that I would like to with a site layout. I had implemented the faux column solution described at alistapart.com to solve the problem of having two divs' background colors stretch to fit the content, no matter which column was longer. This is no longer an option, since I cannot use a container layer that encapsulates the two columns. Is there any way with CSS to make the background colors of the two columns stretch without using a background image and/or a container layer?

For reference, I have a header layer, a floated left menu layer, a content layer, and a clear=both footer layer.

Thanks.
