"An avatar (abbreviations include AV, ava, avie, avy, avi, avvie, avis, and avvy) is an Internet user's representation of himself or herself" - Wikipedia
Hello, it's time for the sequel to my 'Know your Fellow Programmers' thread, only this one doesn't have such a specific purpose. I was honoured to have my last thread made a sticky and am glad it has been so popular. This one however is just for fun.
Quite often I stumble across some interesting Avatars, and they fascinate me. Sometimes you have to really look at them to realise its a lamb in a storm trooper suit and not a poodle. Other times, there's nothing more to it then the love for a character or person you wish to express (mine for example, represents my arrogance).
So reading the above definition, what does yours say about you? Why did you choose it, and did you make it yourself or find it on the web?
I look forward to hopefully finding out a bit about these images i'm subjected too multiple times each day,
Thank you,
John
I like hats.
I like hats.
Detective not needed to work this out!
Touché... I swear I used to have an action figure who looked similar. Am I not looking at Dik Tracy here then? Though if you like hats, bright yellow admitably would be the way to go!
* edit : Due to the nature of the detectives name, it has been delibrately mis-spelt to escape the filter
I'm on a crusade to bring
I'm on a crusade to bring the fedora back into fashion. This is driven by the fact that hats are extremely cool and, more importantly, the fact I am totally incapable of growing anything that even begins to resembles a hairstyle.
Mine just represents

Deuce,
Are those your eyes?
It's a good idea... I think it might be broken though, I keep waiting, and it's not showing me the IE logo...
What's the 'Die Please' bit all about?

It's my character in Elder
It's my character in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. She is a fierce fighter and goes by the name Shulamith. I love her alot
Avat - ahhh!!
childofgaia : Is that a quiver on her back? She an archer. I must confess, as far as computer generated characters go, she's better looking then that Toom Raider lass! Having said that, I prefer blondes, haha!
I've got a friend who lives in Stockholm, she keeps trying to get me out there. I understand it's really nice!!
Come to think of it, have you signed my welcome thread . See my signature!
Phreestyle : I use Fedora on my Web Server box here. But I'm guessing that's a different thing
Heh, she's versatile dude.
Heh, she's versatile dude. Archery is just one of her skills. And, her looks is of course custom made to both appeal to me and give her a personality.
Yeah it's kinda neat. Alltough i prefer the northern parts of the country, especially bare mountain regions such as this: http://www.fotosidan.se/gallery/viewlarge.htm?ID=310046&target=_blank
RyanAir has some very inexpensive flights over here.
Thanks for the tip
I'll look in to Ryanair then! You sound like you've looked in to it yourself so do you have friends over here then, or have you travelled here yourself?
John
I selected mine for its
I selected mine for its obscurity. Anyone that knows where it comes from has been either extremely sheltered (in a demented world) or very exposed. The movie it comes from is one of my favorites (in a twisted way).
I won't say what movie it is, but I'd love to have someone recognize it.
LokiLoks
Bizarre
My first reaction was 'Labyrinth' but then I thought it looked more like a character from 'Dark Crystal' which I vaguely remember from years back. Are either right?
It's a strange little thing! But kind of nice
Sorry, no. I did enjoy both
Sorry, no.
I did enjoy both movies, in fact I think I'll check out dark crystal again, it's been a long time.
Of course, you're correct that he's a puppet. I suppose it's not that hard to figure out if you're a googlemaster.
LokiLoks
My avatar depicts two
My avatar depicts two individuals involved in a deep existential conversation where figure 1 (my dog) is providing the proposition that existence precedes essence and figure 2 (me) argues that one is not bound to the generalities and priori definitions of what "being human" connotes.
Hopefully what this avatar says about me is my emphasis on action, freedom, and decision as fundamental and the need to oppose oneself to rationalism and positivism.
And plus I like computers and stuuuuuffff...
Mine came from a wallpaper
Mine came from a wallpaper from a Finnish hard NRG website.
What are some good Finnish
What are some good Finnish NRG DJs? I really got into nrg when I was in Tokyo, they love their harcore techno there. My favorite UK dark dnb DJs are Subfocus and Pendulum. Exile is good too.

@Lokiloks, Is this a image
@Lokiloks,
Is this a image from the 'Tales of the Crypt' ... i think it was quite a old series in your area, but in india is started just 3-4 years back.
Anyways, my image is a 'Pea Blue' butterfly, whose behavior kinda suits my personality as well as my hobby, as well as my tobe profession i.e. photography.
As a matter of fact, this is one of the flutterbies that got me into photography.

WEIRD!!
Lokiloks : So I went to google.com (I get re-directed to google.co.uk) and typed in lokiloks. Then I clicked the 'Images' tab so imagine my surprise when the first image that comes up is Hugo's avatar!! Followed by a page of csscreator avatars... but alas, no clues where your puppet is originally from. Another clue?
Jenni : How's the debate going. I can see both sides, but am unsure which way I lean. A Yahoo horoscope once told me... "John, you've sat on the fence so long you broke it, but at least now you know what side your on". I might try that tactic to evaluate whether you or your dog are right.
Tyssen & Jenni : Would either of you be able to fill me in on what NRG stands for? Much obliged and apologies for my ignorance.
Triumph : Computer game? Super Hero? I'm a touch lost I'm afraid... though definitely approving!
Mihirc : Flutterbies... I haven't heard that before, I like it!
Who else hasn't explained their avatar yet?

:? that google, is there no end to what it will cache they must have a damn big hard drive
My picture is simply enigmatic and deep allowing the viewer to place their own interpretation on it, such as 'tit', 'fool', 'gormless' etc or possibly it could be 'Grasshopper' perhaps even 'The Watcher' (slimmed down version) or maybe simply a graphic representation of " I wandered lonely as a cloud..."
A mini-rant
Hugo : Your avatar was a large part, though I'd have never have admitted it if you hadn't contributed to this thread, behind why I wrote it!
"allowing the viewer to place their own interpretation on it" - See, I had done just that, and enjoyed doing so.
I see a warrior... it may be a staff he is holding, but I see a spear. Due to the nature of the weapon, I'm assuming he is a warrior history has long forgotten and with his 'easter island' shaped head, he is surely an important man.
His silouette against the mysterious sun shining through the eery evening clouds shows his respect for those things even he will never conquer, whether he's a religious man considering god, or just thinking of the earth he shall never fully understand.
He is on some form of rock, which to me at least suggests a cliff and I imagine a vast valley before him, reflecting these solitary sun beams breaking through and inspiring him with awe and being a warrior, filling him with a much appreciated sense of peace and comfort.
And of course he appears to be carrying a bag that I like to think contains perhaps artefacts he's been in search of, or souvenirs from fallen comrades such as jewelry or engraved daggers.
His message is simple. "I shall never give up..."
10 out of 10 for your Avatar Hugo!

lokiloks: I recognize your avatar. But what movie is that runt starring in? Meet the Feebles?
burlster: I've been there. But long time ago. I don't know any om my friend who HASN'T been to London. Considering it cost's about 30 gbp to fly there.
It essentially the majesty
It essentially the majesty of nature, one of those moments that if one is lucky enough to encounter simply fills you with that utterly gob smacked feeling and an understanding of being part of a whole that is so much greater than the sum of our lives, or something along those lines
You know, I don't remember.
You know, I don't remember. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time!
Excellent
Childofgaia : "Jesus, people are tireless in this forum. Don't you guys ever work? xP" - This is work for me, I think it's nice to have a light-hearted thread or two in a forum all about code . As I don't get to practise my CSS very often due to my job, I just read and prepare myself for some serious coding in the near future, reading all the threads here in this forum. But in the mean time it's nice to feel I'm contributing to the forum I take so much from in some way, haha!
Hugo : I think I know the moments to which you refer. I remember as a kid a holiday in Cornwall, looking out over the sea in the morning in a holiday house with a massive feeling of excitement, and waking up the folks to go down to the beach. When I went in the back garden though as we waited, I stood on the grass/sand combination and looked over the sea in complete awe.
Chris..S : Curious, if this was a dream analysis thread (something I do in my spare time), I'd try to work out the reverse metaphor, but perhaps you just liked the way it looked?
Sharky and George
I must confess, it was this forum where I learnt about Banksy too, before I went running off to Wikipedia to complete my research. It's a nice nod of respect not using that image here then, though perhaps the people (person) who introduced you would be honoured you were using an image they aided you in discovering.
I'd love to know what Roytheboys avatar was all about!

eerm...I wasn't happy with anything I had on hand, didn't think it suited this forum, so I went looking and found the daisy. If I remember rightly the thought process was something like "oh yeah, it's blue, that'll match the forum so that'll do" Besides...it was fairly noncommital I thought

Sorry about my Pine-appaling idea!
Smee - Wasn't there a discussion I over-read (the equivalent of over-hearing) at some point about the pulsating aspect of your flower being a little scary? Nice though!!
TPH - I put my avatar as the IE logo once just to wind people up. It worked too well and I even got an IM or two, so I won't do that again! A fictional expression of belief being mis-interpreted as real hasn't caused so much mass hysteria since Orsen Welles 1938 radio production of 'War of the Worlds' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_%28radio%29). Ever tinted your cut out face orange in Photoshop and stuck it on a pineapple to see how it would look?

rofl sounds dead scary, is that the look from across the room that says "if you dare come near me with that party popper grr"
A walk in the Shark
Roytheboy and Hugo - I'm actually quite glad it is party related. I was reading about the 1916 shark attacks in New Jersey a couple of days ago, and how due to the First World War, the papers used shark faces on German boats and the likes in the cartoons. Your avatar has that 'shark-vehicle' feel about it, like it should be on the front of a boat or plane!

I thought Roys avatit was Wolverine or at least a wolverine, is there such a creature or am I imagining that? Am I just lost in a time warp world of Marvel comics
Hugo -
Hugo - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine Fascinating. I can see the resemblance, and they seem to be symbols of power, being particularly strong for their size. Shame about the "skunk bear" reference, haha!
You got it child!
lokiloks: I recognize your avatar. But what movie is that runt starring in? Meet the Feebles?
Yep that's it.
The movie Meet the Feebles is one of the most raunchy grotesque displays of life. If you like Team America: World Police, South Park, Beavis & Butthead, Boston Legal, or Borat you might want to check it out. But be forewarned, it's truly AWEFUL . The movie is essentially the story of "real people" muppets trying to get their variety show on TV while dealing with their personal issues which I won't mention because some of us may be in an office. Don't think that it's only an excercise in grotesqueness, the characters' issues are done quite well. One sequence is a great example of a "break from reality", maybe third only to Psycho and The Shining.
Meet the Feebles was directed by Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings series. My friend and I are calling for a massive ad campaign re-release of the Feebles capitalizing on Jackson's fame. By the way, Jackson also did Dead Alive which also has a place in the horror movie section of my heart.
LokiLoks
Dusted!
Lokiloks - On your description alone, I went to check out the sort of prices I'd be looking at to purchase the DVD. Alas, I couldn't find anything region 2 so shall have to hunt later when I'm not at work!
Still, thanks for what I'm considering a 'recommendation'. My girlfriend loves that sort of stuff and will be most grateful. I myself and picturing a muppet version of a bizzare late night cartoon we had here called... urm... hang on, I have to look it up!

You do know he's not American, right?
And to answer your question from yesterday (which I actually did do yesterday but my Internet dropped out for the rest of the day just as I hit reply):
The closest Japanese DJ to the Finnish NRG sound that I know of would be Yoji Biomehanika, although he's more hardstyle. I don't know how well known they'd be outside of Finland, UK and Australia, but the big names are Proteus (similar style of costumes and theatrics to Yoji), Carbon Based, Pain on Creation and Alex Szahala.
