In that case I've done the quick change and uploaded it, but it makes no appreciable difference that I can discern.

If by difference you mean

If by difference you mean drop downs in IE all I can say is that they are working for me in IE6, so you must look to problems at a local level?

Tab spacing seems identical for all tabs, both browsers.

Oh no! Don't tell me things like that! I am running FF2 and it gets its updates automatically (I just choose whether I will install them then or the next time I open FF) and I'm running IE6 6.0.2800.1106 with SP1 and something called Q833989 - as far as I'm aware these are both the latest. Sad

Hmmm...well it just let me tweak the #nav margin over to 143px which lines the tabs up in both browsers up better. Now I'd like the background to the #nav to be purple, so I put the background in #nav but it only paints out the pattern from the menu onwards. I also tried it in UL which is where it is now and an interesting problem rears its head.

I had this way back in the beginning BH (Before Hugo Smile ) but can't for the life of me remember what it was or how I solved it then.

Let it paint in IE then without doing anything, look at the pink double bordered newsletter box on the right - there appears to be something showing through the double border - I know I've seen this before. :? Any clues?

Didn't scroll down did I?

:ohdear: Didn't scroll down did I? the background is also on my AIMS ul...I figured out ages ago that it was getting the purple text from my list in the css - is something there interfering with your menu?

EDIT: Ha! The DDs are there! But they're behind the #maincontent again...I didn't change any zoom or z-index why have they gone behind?

The problem is that solutions are provided on the basis of what's required at the time these solutions may not suit later changes without having to re-think the original approach to coding something.

Of course you can not 'paint' out more than the area of the tabs as the ul is margined away from the left, you can't 'paint' margins.

IE does not follow the specification for aspects of the box model correctly; a background is meant to be 'painted' on the elements canvas that should mean from extreme box edge to edge including the borders and padding of the box, IE halts the background when it meets the border, incorrect; not a problem when the border is solid but when it's double there is a gap between the two borders that gap should show the box background it won't in IE

Which is why I wanted the wrapper, I figured the background would work in that Laughing out loud

The bit about the stuff appearing inside the double border...which you've just explained beautifully thank you very much!

I think I must have edited my last post while you were answering...the DDs in IE are there, but behind the #maincontent :?

Then put the wrapper back;

Then put the wrapper back; as I explained a while back the wrapper should have no consequence in place or removed, if it does then something is amiss.

I simply can't advise about the dropdowns as I've said they work for me locally and looking at you test site, so unless you have not updated the server test copy and have made some changes to your local copy that they are not working in , then I am at a loss as to why the different views.

We're almost there Hugo!

I did put the wrapper back and it does just what I always thought it's supposed to...finally and at last! Smile

And I'm mystified about the DDs

Noooo...I'm updating the server copy constantly, not even overwriting but deleting the one that's there and then uploading the new one.

Actually it's the other way around...the DDs show locally but not when it's uploaded to site *sigh*

Hello Hugo...my

Hello Hugo...my apologies...I viewed the site at work today and you're right again, the DDs are there!

So it would seem that my IE is corrupt and I have to re-install it? Sad Not something I'm looking forward to I can assure you.

I also noted the background is still positively sickly on the TFT screens so if you see a medium-dark smokey purple on your travels do use a colour picker to note its # for me please (I have Slayer Office's handy so it's less than a minute to grab a colour) - it's in your own interests after all, we have a long way to go yet Tongue

While there may be some minor changes - is anything ever minor with you he asks - as I get it the bits attached to the tabs, I think D#7 is finally "in line" wouldn't you say?

There are tools that can

There are tools that can effect repairs to IE but it sounds odd that this happens, but can't think of a particular reason for the problem.

I'll have a look a little later, as I'm rushing out, and if I can I'll look at some colours for you, give you some options.

Hmmm...now I come to think of it, I had a 'bug' about a month ago that was causing spontaneous reboots and of course I had a zillion things open whenever it did it. Chances are it may have happened then since I've been grizzling that the local render is quite different from the loaded site for most of this thread.

It was out for a

It was out for a while.

Colours:

original colour de-saturated a touch: #674774

Hue adjusted less red more blue (less harsh): #514774

soft light pastely purple: #8C79B0

washed out de-saturated pastely purple: #BAADC4

washed out pastel, higher hue (warmer): #C4ADB3

course the header image needs adjusting as well!

WOW Hugo!! All of those

WOW Hugo!! All of those actually look great on my old CRT as well! (Which was also important) Whaddya know, the man has an eye for colour as well Smile I shall send them to work to try out and report back. I had tried to do some colour hunting at work a while ago but 1) don't have the time once I get there and 2) it was frustrating to have a day's turnaround to find they didn't work on my monitor at home.

Pastely? :?

Well you know it was sort of

Well you know it was sort of pastel yet perhaps not quite, so it was sort of pastel but a bit 'ily' maybe it should have been pastelily but that reads as paste lilies so thought pastely was better as that would be read as paste ly which sounds phonetically closer to pastily than paste-lilies, but all these sound vaguely daft now so thinking about it pastel-ish would have been best or actually pastel-ishy

Laughing out loud Oh Hugo! ROFL! Be careful, I think I'm starting to wear off on you! Shock

I did finally twig about 20 mins later that it was 'sposed to be pastel-y but I read it first off as paste-ly and it made nooo sense at all! Laughing out loud

Hugo wrote:

Yes pastel-ish prolly would have conveyed your meaning first off but I got there in the end. Smile

Okaaaay...I've checked them out at work and Well Done!

original colour de-saturated a touch: #674774
Hue adjusted less red more blue (less harsh): #514774
Yes - I favour the second, blue-er one for a darker colour too.

soft light pastely purple: #8C79B0
This one is a lovely colour, but doesn't strike me as a background. :? I think I'll keep that one and see how it works as the highlight colour, though it is very close to the one that is already around the left boxes.

washed out de-saturated pastely purple: #BAADC4
washed out pastel, higher hue (warmer): #C4ADB3
And I really like both of these, I'm actually quite fond of that pale muchroom colour, don't know if it's right for the site with that pattern though.

I did also try #676C7F - trying to pick out the silvery-grey colour, but it's not quite right either. I think this could work as a contrast but would need to be careful that the silver header will show up - though I favour the shiny silver from the Catullus header you got bored with Smile I just can't make that into text 'cos I don't have the software.

Sooo...I've decided I can't decide. What would you like to work with for the time being? You can have your choice and I'll give the Lis and Jim the final say before it goes live.

Thanks Hugo! Any further thoughts on IE?

Well I've been a busy

Well I've been a busy bee!

1) Both browsers behave now 'cos I dnloaded a new text editor, so might have been a missing or mangled dll???

2) I went with the dark background so that I don't have to think about changing the colour of the tabs for the moment.

3) What do you think of one of those email things? I think the blue/mauve (don't know what colour it is for you) or the grey is probably best...or should I just forget about putting anything there and hide it in the Home tab?

4) My Favicon won't work Sad I know it's the statement, but I've tried several.

This is not a multi-choice questionaire Laughing out loud

I'd probably go for the

I'd probably go for the small rectangle email icon.

Not sure why your favicon isn't working but don't they have to be in the root document folder (top level)?

The background looks much better not so overpowering.

Tongue That's the one I installed first and then it occurred to me to give you the choice....I'm assuming you mean the one with the little purple letter to the left?

Well that's what it says on the site but when I put it there and tried their statement it doesn't work...

Does it really not need a type?

There's sumit wrong then;

There's sumit wrong then; either you haven't saved/made the file correctly or the server doesn't know how to serve that file, if you add 'favicon.ico to the domain url you should see the image displayed all you see on your page is that url returned as text

There most definitely was

There most definitely was 'sumit' wrong Laughing out loud

The problem was that when I dnloaded the Favicon it was 0KB when I unzipped it...I tried this several times and had no success...sooooo...there's more than one way to make an icon and it's name is Microangelo for those who need to know Tongue

So I saved my .gif as a .jpg and imported it to Microangelo and saved it as .ico

It might not be the final but for now it's better than a blank page Smile

Well I've spent far too long

Well I've spent far too long on shades of purple today to no avail I think, since I haven't the faintest idea what it looks like on your screen. So since you're not impressed with my favicon adventure would you kindly do one more colour check for me please? Smile

Menu - the current colours look fine from my end but are they too bright? not the right purple? Underline on or off? Need anything else?

Headings - 2 colours needed - the headings on the home page seem about the right colour here but clash with the list dots (AIMS) which seem to be blue-er and try as I might today, I haven't been able to make a dot to match the headings. How do they look to you?

This heading colour - #9249AA - is the same as all the purple text on the FACETS page. So I could use it on other pages if it looks okay there, but what to do on the home page? It doesn't have to be the same colour as the dots, but it does need to look right.

The only other colours I'm using are the "This Month" (#602B74) and I've changed the pink at the bottom of the pages to a dark lavender-grey (#7A5773)...any good?

I think I almost have a menu Hugo!!!!! THANK YOU!
