hi all,

I have been going through the faux column articles, and it is really good, and i have been using it for some time. But then i know that we use a background image to giv an effect of the continuing div.
But here's the catch, how do i implement faux columns for a fluid layout? If i use a backgound image, it wont 'resize' according to the column width. it will crop itself...

what can be done?

It'll depend how fluid your layout is. If it's a two column layout and only the larger area is fluid, then you can just use the normal faux columns technique. If it's a 3-column layout with fixed outer columns and fluid centre, you can use the same technique but instead of one, have two wrapper elements, one with the colour for the left column and one for the right; and if you had all three fluid, then you'd take the two wrapper technique that one step further and end up with what's described in the liquid faux columns article.

common misunderstanding

The advice for those who are new in webdesign is that they should not use a div for everything, say a div for an h2. It's easier to memorise with analogies like "divitis is as bad as diverticulitis". Sadly, some people have learned that a div is bad, and two divs are worse. A problematic common misunderstanding that can be read even in ALA articles. There is no evidence for div-counting as a measure for the quality of a layout. A better measure would be its cross-browser stability, the question if its usability is constrained by the layout, and if conceptual choices would interfere with the accessibility of a page build with that layout.

I agree. If a DIV is necessary for some styling objective then put it in, but only perhaps after considering if the style you need it for is going to make the page work better for the user who is, after all, the one you are presumably trying to please with your design.

Phew! Is that a new record for sentence length? Smile

Extra markup is irrelevant to the user.

The reality in many cases, is it is not your design and the design has been signed off by the client. Not producing something that matches the signed off design is not delivering to spec.

Hmm...

As you ppl say, if a div is necessary put it in, right? Have you guys tried what i was suggesting? Because i am trying to release some really good free fluid templates (For Joomla!) and i wanted them to work properly.

@Chris..S , is it possible for you to explain it by showing what you mean by the layout.

No no, :blushing: you get me wrong. I meant if something has been tried by you guys before, wether i could see it.

If no, then i will start doing it from scratch. If you had done something like this, before, i would have been able to check and proceed faster...
