Hi

I am working on a redesign of our companies website. Generally, I do database administration, so this is not my strong suit. I have used Dreamweaver MX to create a template of our page. I am having problems with the layout of the header and would like to see if anyone can help.

My desired header look can be found at [url]http://www.cedwvu.org/Template/. The problem with this layout is that it uses tables, which I am trying to avoid. I would also like to fill the white space on the right side of the header with a randomly changing picture. I have seen this done other websites and when I looked at the source code for the randomly changing picture, it looked as though the website was using css in some fashion to change the picture.

Since the page is still a work in progress, much of the template's text is still present as placeholders. I want to get the layout fixed correctly before I put in any real content.

Thanks for your help.

Hi I think by mentioning DW

Hi
I think by mentioning DW and tables you have put people off helping. However I see you have attempted the layout in css using a DW template and have only used a table for the heading.

I think you need to look at tutorials in how to use divs to get a general understanding of how to use them in layout, like the kind on the adobe website
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/designing_css.html

To layout your #masthead here is some code I put together:

West Virginia University

Centre For Excellence In Disabilities

West Virginia University

Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center

#masthead { padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; height: 188px; }

#masthead h1 {
background: url(../images/ced_logo3.gif);
width: 222px;
height: 188px;
no-repeat; float: left;
text-indent:-99999em;
font-size:0px;
line-height:0px;
overflow:hidden;}

#masthead h2 {
font-family:Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
color: Navy;
font-size: 16px;
padding: 80px 0px 0px 300px;
}

#globalNav{padding: 0px 0px 5px 300px; color: #cccccc;}

#globalNav img{ display: block;}

#globalNav a { font-size: 90%; padding: 0 4px 0 0;}

Addittional

Emma, I know it's a minor point, but could you perhaps just increase the line spacing for the h2 in masthead instead of using line break tags?

Hope your a little closer to the solution Risikio,

John

Hi burlster I wasn't sure

Hi burlster

I wasn't sure how to get around that...thing is the H2 lines have to be on separate lines and to increase the top margin means each one would then be pushed down further on the page.

I agree the breaks are not ideal...but was not sure of the best way to do it :?

You could give them classes or IDs and remove the margins from some so that they are spaced how you want them, however, in this case, I don't believe they are separate headings - they're all part of one heading so your options are to either use line breaks or wrap each separate bit in a span and make the spans display: block.

Okay - good tips there...thanks Tyssen

Risikio: To go back to the original thread, the bit I did not cover was how to do a randomly changing image in css...from reading this seems to have to be done with a scripting language like php see

Thanks

Thanks everyone for all your help. Can I ask why people might be put off because I mentioned DW and tables? Is there something wrong with using DW? Just asking. I am relatively new to this. I was also under the impression that this forum was meant to help people move away from tables, but if I have posted in the wrong forum, I apologize.

I will look at the tutorial and see if I can get the randomly changing image to work. Thanks again for all your help.

LOL I have no problem with

LOL I have no problem with DW but I know others here criticise it for not being WYSIWYG when it comes to css, and say the code it writes isn't up to scratch. I personally use it as an editor & hand code, find the validate code facility etc. helpful.

People like to see that you have attempted the code in css and not in tables, so they are not having to write code from scratch just to hand to you.

It's the correct forum, just saying the way you word your posts may mean some people switch off if they think you are asking them to re-code tables in css.

I just viewed the tutorial

I just viewed the tutorial on the randomly changing image. It looks pretty simple, so I am going to give it a try. Thanks again for this link.

I typically try to do most of my coding by hand in DW as well, but when our director asked for this redesign, he has not liked anything anyone has presented (outside vendors included), so I thought I would try one of the templates and try to keep it simple, especially since I am familiar with CSS but not necessarily proficient with it yet.

Thanks.

I did the same actually for my first css job...when a tight turn around is needed and you are a css beginner it is difficult.

DW

FYI, none of us have a problem with Dreamweaver as a hand-coding program, the syntax highlighting is quite decent.

It's just the crap it churns out in WYSIWYG mode Wink

My problem with DW, from my

My problem with DW, from my limited experience with it recently, is when you have to create a Design Time Stylesheet just for DW because the people updating the site are using Contribute and because DW/Contribute's handling of CSS positioning is [email protected] You spend all your time learning techniques to not have to create multiple stylesheets, and then you come up against something like this and you have no choice.

Another problem with header layout

Thank you everyone again for the help on my original problem. I have solved both issues with the header layout and randomly changing image (I do have to remove the company logo from the rotation), but now I have created another problem.

I attempted to change my navigation menu to a Javascript drop down menu. When I link to the appropriate Javascript files, and place the code in the appropriate div tags, the script works, but the menu is not placed in the layout correctly. The menu is suppose to be under the company logo and not in the middle of the logo. I do not know if the problem is in the javascript or the css, but I am guessing it is the css since the css controls layout. If someone could look at my code to see if I have the css correct, that would be great. Also, if anyone can tell me if this is common with javascript, (showing up in the wrong location), that would be helpful as well. Any help is greatly appreciated. If it is a javascript problem, please let me know and I will try to find the answer in a javascript forum. Thanks.

The template is still located at http://www.cedwvu.org/Template/ to see how the css is rendering the javascript menu.
