Heres the code, being viewed in IE6, its from a book that im learning from, however, when i follow the instructions, the text is perfectly centreed. then the exercise gets you to add an image to create a rounded corner box type thing. As soon as i add the three lines seen below (background, width, padding), the image appears at the left AND it pulls the text into it - I was expecting the image to just appear behind the centred text????? please help!

Without seeing the rest of the code and the image, it's a bit tricky.

Try adding this line-

background-position: center;
