hi,
I just wanted to put in a request and wanter your opinion on it. There are atleast 20 newbies posting their queries here, they do post their codes and their html files but the forget to give the live site so that we can check the status. Is it possible for you, to put in a small scroll on top of every "post" page so that is clearly visible to the person who posts...? bcz half the time, we hav to ask for a live site and then only can we figure out the problem...
thanks,
mihir.
You have no idea how often
You have no idea how often we've discussed about this.
Idiots don't read the stickies. If we were to put the forum rules at the top of every post pages as well, they'd still just get ignored.
We need to consolidate them all, into one rules thing, then if it's obvious someone hasn't read them post a link and lock the thread till they've got it into their head
hi, since i have joined
hi, since i have joined recently, i seriously have no idea...
but that's the problem with stickies... they are so big, nobody cares to read them. For example, if ur installing some free ware... then it has that big big warning... do we read it?? am not saying that there shouldnt be rules but if we want to help ppl, and ppl want help from us, then we need to tell them what we need to help them...

How do you think I've got so
How do you think I've got so many posts?
Most of my activity here these days is adding code tags, splitting topics, and asking people to please read the fricking rules and post their code.
You really dont need to be
You really dont need to be alone on that posting everest, cause if this persists "can you please giv us a live link??" i will be reaching k2 in a month and will be up with you, within 2.

No nothing further can be
No nothing further can be done, all that can be done has been done, and no amount of re-jigging or re-thinking the approach will have any effect.
Let me stress some extreamely basic rules , for anyone not clear on forum procedures, these are generic accepted approaches to participation in a forum, not particular to any specific forum.
Firstly one 'Lurks' on a forum. 'Lurking' means to read and observe the forum without initially activly participating in the forum; this is meant to acclimatize the person to the style and attitude of the forum, they should have a good idea of how to ask and answer questions from reading posts and have a good feel for the spirit of the forum.
Secondly or even in tandem with lurking, should be a pre-requisite that ALL forum guidelines and any pertinent stickies are searched for, read, and digested. These posts inform the prospective poster on what procedures they are meant to follow, and how to behave. These 'rules' are there not because forums are full of officious people that like dictating but as a means of ensuring the happy stable existance of the forum. As rules go, generally they are simple and straightforward and are better refered to as 'Guidelines'.
It is entirely up to the prospective poster to observe these essential guidelines, we can't make them nor can we spend or expend further energy attempting to find alternative methods of enforcing an understanding of correct behaviour.
We will continue to have to point out to a fair few people that they ought to have read these instructions, it's just sadly a fact of life.
In truth what should happen, when a clear lack of conformance is demonstrated, is that the post should actually go unacknowledged, alowing the poster to perhaps reconcider their post and the possible reasons that it has received no attention, this also is one of those forum conventions, but is seldom followed. It is howevr a difficult one to judge, do we seem standoffish? or do we sound like stuck records repeating the same request that stickies should have been read? who knows!
Blimey that's a lot of posts
Blimey that's a lot of posts in the time it took me to write that last post.
I have helped resolve 67 problems, posted "you have no DTD" 4319 times, "please read the stickies" 3164 times, "please post all your code" 2296 times and the rest have been like this one
And I'd love a cake! no candles though
edit/ and no I can't count
In theory many things are
In theory many things are right, but we cannot be that rude as to not reply unless they read all the rules and stickies. so we keep on requesting ppl to ask them to put up a link, or a code or whatever... and since we r doing it for their own good, they gotta understand that...
SO do we be a bit rude???? PLZ READ THE FORUM GUIDELINES AND POST ALL THE THINGS THAT WILL HELP US HELP YOU???
OR MORE NICE.... RESPECTED SIR/MADAM WOULD YOU BE KIND ENOUGH TO POST YOUR LINK HERE???

Both, depending on the
Both, depending on the mood.
Sometimes I'm really nice, I say "please can you show us your HTML", other times it gets subtle such as "please can you show us all your HTML (like the guidelines ask)".
Other times I merely link them to the page.
If I'm really hacked off it's something like "Why did you ignore my BIG RED MESSAGE ABOUT DOCTYPES" and maybe a rolleyes smiley or two.

Yes we can. I do it all the time. If I think a question is to hard too decipher (or too much rambling preamble involved) or too hard to troubleshoot due to what's presented, I'll just move on without saying anything.
As far as posting a link goes, it's not always required and is not, in fact, a requirement stated in the stickies, as long as they post all their code. Like with my post yesterday that you asked for a link for; it wasn't necessary as the code was complete and was all that was required to troubleshoot the problem.
i agree, that a link is not
i agree, that a link is not always required, but seeing the problem with the graphic and the content, helps understand the problem as well as suggest a way-out easily...

The problem is that a lot of
The problem is that a lot of people develop their sites on a local server and thus are unable or unwilling to put it live at that time. There's also commercial confidentiality to consider, in that some sites are intended to stay hidden until a product or service is officially launched. That said, a link to a live site nearly always makes problems much easier to solve! Asking for a link is fine but making it a requirement is unreasonable.
By the way, has anyone told
By the way, has anyone told you how annoying your blinking signature graphic is?
