I cant for the LIFE of me figure out how..

I would really like to learn

I would really like to learn XHTML + CSS, but im being disheartened, I would just like it to work im guessing that code is extremely messy I cant read it so I don't know, my ideal site would be centered like this http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=196/196.css .. in fact thats absolutely perfect, are there images within that css or is that all done via CSS like the shadows and such, how would I go about creating a site that is centered pure white, with shadows either side and a gradient black top to Grey bottom. could you guys guide me through it, iv taken liberty to buy some Lynda.com tutorials

edit: http://www.timovirtanen.com/ or this style.. it would be perfect and clean, how? I have no idea!

Ditch dreamweaver, ditch

Ditch dreamweaver, ditch absolute positioning and ditch tables, they are all evil in the world of CSS.

Mark up your content for what it is - use heading tags for titles, <p> tags for paragraphs, lists for lists of links.

Then use divs (sparingly) to group your HTML into sections.

I know it's difficult, but CSS is going to be impossible to learn if you try it with a WYSIWYG editor and try styling tables. Get out of the mentality as soon as you can.

Also, CSS Zen Garden submissions are bad examples of CSS layouts. They are made by graphic designers, who place everything precisely with Absolute Positioning, and rely on images for nearly EVERY element to show any style.

Try and get your content marked up semantically, and let us know how you get on. If you need help don't be afraid to ask!

Have a read of

Have a read of this:

http://csscreator.com/divitis

You don't have divitis, but it will give you a great introduction for marking up content structurally.

The Divitis article is

The Divitis article is supposed to help converting table layouts to CSS-based layouts but imo it gives an introduction for using semantic elements.

Once you've read it (it's hard to get your head around some of the words) try and mark up your content with HTML tags that reflect what it contains.

Maybe some basic CSS layout and styling tutorials would be best first, for you to try some things out?

I'm not too keen on learning

I'm not too keen on learning from books; the only webdev book I've bought is a PHP one, I have no CSS books.

It's a good idea to read some of the tutorials available on the net, places like W3Schools.com and HTMLdog.com to get started with CSS styling and positioning, then once you've got the hang of that have a go at your layout again.
