Hello all,

I am having two issues with a two-column left layout which I cant get my head around.

1. I would like for my left column background color to be the same no matter how much content is filled up. I have will a menu on the left column, but will not span to the bottom of the page. Thus, the body background of the left column shows maroon.

2. If there is no content in the main content div (lorem itsem, blah-blah), the main content collapses, then makes the page look like sh:)t. Basically, my second question is - is there a way to keep the main content div a fixed height no matter how content is in the div?

My DOCType is set to XHTML Strict which validates no errors:

Here is my CSS:

body {
margin: 0px;
background: #660000;
line-height: 1.4em;
margin-left: +5px;
margin-right: +5px;
border: 2px #a7a7aa ridge;
font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;
}

div#header {
padding: 2%;
text-align: right;
background-color: #0e0e0e;
color: #aeb2ae;
margin-bottom: 0px;
border-top: 1px #a7a7aa ridge ;
border-bottom: 2px #a7a7aa ridge;
background-image: url(../images/meonly.gif);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

div#footer {
padding: 1%;
text-align: left;
clear: both;
background-color: #000000;
color: #656464;
border-top: 2px #a7a7aa ridge;
border-bottom: 2px #a7a7aa ridge;
font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
}

div#maincontent {
padding: 2%;
text-align: justify;
margin-left: 12%;
background-color: #d8d7db;
color: #828184;
}

div#leftcolumn{
padding: 2%;
float: left;
text-align: center;
background-color: #000000;
width: 8%;
z-index: 100;
}

Both 1 and 2 can be solved

Both 1 and 2 can be solved with faux columns.
