Sad I am using a four column layout and have given the containers a solid border so you can see my problem more clearly. The grid structure consists of a top conatiner, middle and bottom. Within the middle container i have four columns. The 1st (width: 22%) ,3rd (width: 1px) and 4th (width: 22%) all have absolute posistions and the 2nd column is relative (currently set to width: 77%).

The 2nd column (mid-col-2) is the one i'm having trouble with. I should be able to set the width to 56% but then this is too narrow in I.E 6, 5.5 but overlaps in Netscape 7. The width is now set to 77% which looks great in the I.E browsers but completely overlapps in Netscape 7. I have tried all manner of things but nothing seems to work (e.g removing 3rd column settting a margin/padding to the right). Please can someone help ??

Getting container width to work in Netcsape and I.E

One problem is that you haven't fully specified your doctype. Try using this:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

For more info on some commonly used doctypes, try looking here.

Hope this helps.
