Thank God I found this forum.
Foremost, I intended my layout to look like this:
http://www.up-amicus.org/lab/
So first I tried some css method to get rid of the tables that looked like this:

body
{
background-color: #FFFFFF;
background-image:
url("http://www.up-amicus.org/lab/images/indexd04.jpg");
margin-left: 0px;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-width: 0px;
margin-height: 0px;
}
A { color: #003366; text-decoration: none; }
A:link { color: #003366; text-decoration: none; }
A:visited { color: #003366; text-decoration: none; }
A:active { color: #999999; }
A:hover { color: #999999; }
#menu
{
width: 779px;
border: 0px;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
}
#menu h1
{
width: 569px;
height: 66px;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background:
url("http://www.up-amicus.org/lab/images/indexa01.jpg");
background-repeat: no-repeat;
float: left;
}
.text1
{
font-family:verdana, tahoma, sans-serif;
font-size:13px;
font-weight:bold;
padding-left:10px;
padding-top:45px;
}
#menu h2
{
width: 210px;
height: 416px;
margin-top: 0px;
background:
url("http://www.up-amicus.org/lab/images/indexb02.jpg") no-repeat top left;
float: right;
}
#thebody
{
width: 569px;
height: 350px;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background: url("http://www.up-amicus.org/lab/images/indexc03.jpg") no-repeat;
float: left;
}

Unfortunately it didn't work so I finally tried using tables then css which you can see here: http://www.up-amicus.org
I somehow was succesful implementing the columns except that right part which is pretty a mess.
Any suggestion how I can effectively display the backgrounds at same time embed text.
Thank you.

www.premrara.com tables and backgrounds

Hello and welcome!

I just spent ages constructing a reply, tried to spell check and SHAZZAM Firefox crashed Crying I knew correct spelling was overrated Wink

anyway i'll try again.

Firstly i am not sure what the look is that you are going for as I could not find anything at the first link you provided.

Secondly there are a few problems with your HTML.
in the bits like
<h3 id="storytitle" id="post-307">
you have both duplicate and non unique Id's. Id's should be unique and each element should only have one.
It looks like you mean to have the post-307 as the ID and the storytitle as a class. Of course if you change the id="storytitle" to class="storytitle" you will have to change it from #storytitle to .storytitle In your CSS.

At a glance you are using the ID of Date a lot too.

In

<span class='children'> >
	<span>
		<a href="http://www...." title="View...">MT Issues</a>
	</span>
	<span>
		<a href="http://www...." title="View...">MT Issues</a>
	</span>
</span>

There is a stray >
Also are the spans around the links strictly needed. Having them should not break anything but they don't seem to serve a reason to me.

For a more detailed list of errors Use the W3C validator
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A//www.premrara.com/

Other than that I'm a bit lost as to what to suggest as I don;t know what you are after and your design does not look obviously broken in my browsers.

www.premrara.com tables and backgrounds

I am sorry. I gave the wrong URI. My original post has been edited. It was supposed to be:
my desired layout is at: http://www.up-amicus.org/lab/
and the main site I am constructing is here: http://www.up-amicus.org

That was pretty fast. Shock

The black text against thr right side nav is unreadable due to the dark color Sad I would make them white also or some color that is readable and remove the underlining .
