My site is here:
http://reignofshadows.org/index.php
http://reignofshadows.org/style.css

I haven't applied a minwidth yet so resizing is still an issue. But it is appearing different in Firefox and IE6 but shows fine in IE5 which is what I'm using. I've doing a holly hack for width, and have heights for my float containers. Occasionally I get a double left margin for mainContent I think. But I loose scrolling in Firefox and have gotten a duplicate mainContent window also.

Any help would be appreciated. If I need to clean up the code a bit, I could do that also.

I could really use some experienced help

1) It will appear differently in IE6 than Firefox, as both IE and Firefox are in Quirks mode, due to the <script> you have above the <doctype>

Ie6 will therefore have a broken box model like IE5

Move the script under the doctype inbetween the <head> tags.

You can always check if it is in quirks mode by typing this in to the address bar when you view the page.

javascript:alert(document.compatMode)

2) You have overflow: scroll; in your CSS for the body - Get rid of it as it will naturally occur anyway.

3)min-width does not work with IE

4) I would think about using one of the excellent 3 columned templates floating around.

hope that helps

I took care of item 1 on your list. I tried to use that script in the address bar, I got an alert "undefined". What alert do you get in quirks mode and what is normal?

item 2 is fixed. Item 3, I have a js that is supposed to make IE do min/max width/height. Anybody know if that actually works?

I thought about using 3 column template, like the one available via form on this site, but I couldn't figure out how to make the left/right columns use an image repeat background, since they are using a left/right colored borders.

1) If quirks message is BackComp, if compliant message is CSS1Comp.
I am not an expert on JS so maybe someone else can tell you why you are getting the undefined statement. (You are typing it into you address bar of your broswer after going to your site?)

3) No idea whether the JS min-width will work, but most I have found a jerky.

4) No the 3 column template here is no good if you want a background image under all, as IE does not support transparent borders.

Have a look at this one http://www.positioniseverything.net/piefecta-rigid.html

First of all, thanks for your help so far Day.

One question, does the script required between the head tag..does that mean php script as well?

I've cleaned up the CSS somewhat. I'm hoping that helps. My resize issue took care of itself in IE5, not sure about the other browsers. Would anybody mind giving me a site check for other browsers and see if there are any bugs I've missed so far? The address is in the first post.

1) Script can pretty well go anywhere, so all the other script was fine. If you are talking about the PHP script which pulls in all your data, then that should be in the body, probably where you already had it.

It was only the script at the top that was the problem, as browsers, especially IE, expect to see the Doctype tag as the first item so they know how to render the page. If not first they assume Quirks mode.

2) You page is now crashing with a php error

Warning: main(): Failed opening '' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/reignofs/public_html/index.php on line 102

I think my problem was that my php script that connects to the db was in the way. I tried to put it in the head tag but it caused a site crash. So I just moved the Doctype tag up above it and it seems to be fine.

By all accounts, the layout looks perfect in IE5.5 (don't know why that gives me a bad feeling???)
You shouldn't get an php script error now, I don't think

It should be fixed now. I tried the link just to make sure.

I had to move the doctype tag below my php mysql_connect script. I hope that didn't throw me back into quirks mode. Thanks for pointing that out, Day.

No, is correctly in CSS1 now .

However the page itself breaks in Moz FF although I am unsure why, which is not unusual when looking at someone elses code, especially when extensive.

I suggest you look at your td.lbsidebar td.rbsidebar lsidepanel and rsidepanel divs

Try temporarily deleting the attributes/values of td.lbsidebar and see what happens in FF.

I was also unsure why the body is positioned absolutely?? as is full width and height.

Anyway have a look at those items.

I changed the body attributes for position and no change in IE5.

I hid the values for td.lbsidebar and kept background and position:relative in, relative is what's keeping floating at top. No change in IE5.

Did the same for td.rbsidebar and still no change in IE5. It looks different in Dreamweaver but looks like its just reflecting the fact that the mainContent is fluid.

I'm attaching the main modules and I've trimmed some script hoping it is easier to follow. The links aren't full url, but the rollover includes the dimensions so should appear broken but same size if viewed. I converted them to htm.

Download FF yourself and see what is happening

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Also download and install the web developer toolbar - it helps to see what is happening on the page
http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/#webdeveloper

All I can say is the left and right sidepanels are your problem areas. In FF their positions are reversed, as if the lsidepanel and rsidepanel divs are being pushed down by something. The problem may be because they are flaoted and the table is no longer recognising them as part of the html flow.

Try not floating them

And if that does not work -
I suggest you get rid of the attributes for the TD column itself and make that a separte div so you get something like this on left and right sides

<td>
<div class="lefttop">menu with background etc NOT FLOATED</div>
<div class="bottom">bottom half with background etc NOT FLOATED</div>
</td>
but may cause a height problem (getting correct height) so...

why have divs, just use one background image for the TD like thus
<td class="whatever with background image>
menu
</td>

NB: Others have had problems previewing in Dreamweaver. I use 1st page which has immediate preview. It is very old and not supported, but I think is still the best. http://www.evrsoft.com/download.shtml
Further note: it contains an old javascript that has been classed as a virus or trogan, but is not, so disregard. You can get more information here http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/announcement.php?f=42 about that.

I'm downloading both of them now. I'll have to take a look tomorrow, since I gotta get up in a few hours and need a few zzz's. Thanks for your help, Day. Laughing out loud Maybe if I look at it in FF, I'll be able to figure it out.

I could really use some experienced help

I used Firefox to troubleshoot my CSS. I did get the sidebars to move up the page. Apparently, FF prefers valign in the td tag, IE5 doesn't even notice.

Still can't figure out why the backgrounds for td.rbsidebar and td.lbsidebar won't repeat-y. I tried using background shorthand instead, no joy.

Anybody have any ideas?

FF does not seem to recognise that the table or the cells you have your background images contain anything, as the divs are floated.

Therefore the cells are not expanding, but should if part of the middle table cell??

See http://www.csscreator.com/css-forum/ftopic3186.html which may help.

No joy. The background is expanding to the size of the contained float, but won't recognize the size of the mainContent td. I can get the background to increase in height by adding top padding or top margin. I was thinking about adding a bunch of top padding and setting overflow: invisible. Do you think that will cause big problems?

Be the way, I'm really glad you recommended I download FireFox for myself. I haven't used IE but once since I downloaded it. I'm finding it very useful as a developer tool. Anybody have any plugin's they'd recommend besides webdeveloper, toolbarext and sessionsaver?

I quite like the look of the small rendering extension, but can't get it to load up.
