I created two stylesheets (one for display, one for a printable version) for a website I am designing, and both work like a charm in Safari, SunriseBrowser, and Shiira.

But not AT all in Firefox. The page is completly naked, as it was before I linked a CSS style-sheet to it.

Has anyone else had this problem? How can I solve it?

French girl you have forgotten to close a property rule in your stylesheet, the first thing you must check when having problems is the basic syntax for errors such as that , it's not really our job Smile this may or may not sort the problem, may just be a typo in posting up to the forum of course, if it does not cure problem then post up the HTML as well.

what's up with the forum?

It's the forum!!!
I checked it after posting and half my text had dissapeared!
So I edited
and the same problem.
but the text entered was good.
I promise you that's not what's in my index.html file!!!
proof of this is that if that was my code it wouldn't work in ANY of my browsers.

What is <doctype> ? is that the actual DTD or a representation of it?

And the code you have posted shows no sign of a complete head section where's the stylesheet call?

I see Hugo has forgotten about the little forum problem. You need to click Disable HTML in this post to acurately show code now.

If you check "disable HTML in this post" when you post it/edit it, it should stop all the class names and such being stripped out.

Were having a lot of x-posts Smile which makes things difficult . when posting ensure you have turned off the use html tags checkbox thingy, in other words disable html tags, there seems to be problems at the mmoment with posting code on the forum.

Laughing my nuts off here. Check back previous page I already answered it.

One LINK tag isn't closed the XHTML way, this may account for the problem.

ok, fixed it

ok, I fixed it, saved my document, and reloaded the page in firefox. It still doesn't work.
And BTW it did work in most of my browsers, even with the mistake (which was a typing problem)

It would be nice not to make fun of me.

Complete confusion day, no-ones making fun of you. We all seem to be cross posting and forgetting to disable what we told you to.

Please stick around though, coss this is usually a great forum when we aren't all making complete fools of ourselves.

Strange problem though. If you had a link we could tell you if it worked on our Firefoxs, It could be a problem with your configuration of Firefox /Computer.

You mentioned that it wasn't working in Firefox, but was in a few others. Sounds silly, but is it working in Internet Explorer?

Also, have you validated your CSS and HTML (Hugo mentioned an error in it a few comments back, so you may have already corrected it)? I'm not really sure WHY it's not being picked up, except for maybe you have an error somewhere in your CSS which means that it's not being completely parsed.

(And I'm sorry if I was laughing inappropriately. Honestly - I'm laughing at Joseph and Hugo following me around!)

No only moderators, we have to preserve our dignity at all times Smile we can also edit or delete anyone elses posts as well!

btw we must clear up common mis-conception: all Moderators are Gurus but not all Gurus are moderators.

Actually Jo I think you are imagining things are you sure I posted ?

@Frenchgirl time to take some simple steps to isolate the problem firstly add all your style rules to the head of the page as embedded <style> rules lets eliminate any strange path problems and have the styles working in the page if they still don't then we have a problem somewhere with the rules.

Hugo.

This might not help at all, but what happens if you add media="screen" (as you have for the print sheet) to the main stylesheet?

Anyway, time to go home from work now, but I'm sure Joseph and Hugo will follow up. Smile

Hi frenchgirl,

Welcome to the forums. Just try to ignore some of the shenanigans in the clown show. Smile

If you will go to your profile (found on the forums' index page), and look towards the bottom, you will find a section labeled "Preferences". In that section, click

Always allow BBCode: *Yes* No
Always allow HTML: Yes *No*

If you do that, you won't have to worry about it on each post.

cheers,

gary

Zip files are a pain frenchgirl and we prefer not to deal with them.

Why not just post the page and CSS up live?

Regardless you still have that typo I mentioned about 17 posts ago:

Wow, strangest thing happened. I got your zip and then just looked at the page which still wasn't showing the style. I then opened it up in Dreamweaver and then saved it straight away with no changes and it worked.

You may want to try something similar. I have no idea why it would do that. Checked it three times and in IE and it works for me now.

That IS strange.
I've been using textedit to do all my sites, I don't have dreamweaver. I don't understand why just saving it in dreamweaver without changing anything would fix it.

I've tried it a few times now and it solves it. I keep unzipping to a fresh folder and trying it and it has your problem until I save it again.

Try saving it again with Notpad/textedit or something.

I don't think this is that far fetched since if i open your html file in notepad everything is on one line, but in dreamweaver its formatted nicely.

When I then save it and open it in notepad it's formatted nicely how it should. I think maybe your TextEdit is encoding in a strange way that makes it perform unexpectedly.

hmm in my text edit it's formated nicely. might be a textedit/ notepad incompatibility.

I think I understand why this happened. At first it worked in firefox but then I changed the encoding of all my .html files because the encoding messed up my accents.
But since there were no accents to mess up in the .css files I didn't change the encoding.
Firefox is just being fussy about it Tongue

And I would imagine that Dreamweaver just saves perfectly, hence just resaving solved it.

I don't know if this is the problem, but it is a problem. You have saved the .html files (index and pointbible) as big endian unicode. My Firefox, at least, is choking on it. The css file is encoded as ANSI, which is fine. Re-encoding the html files as utf-8 (without a Byte Order Mark (BOM)) caused everything to appear as I expect you want; well, it looks pretty much like IE's rendering.

I suspect you're using a MSFT editor, which likes to put BOMs on everything, or you specified Unicode+BOM.

[edit] Wow! You guys are quick. And, you solved it without without my guru-ness to guide you. Either utf-8 or utf-16 are fine, and are self describing, thus needing no BOM. [/edit]

cheers,

gary

Hum isn't it amazing how the dumbest mistakes that take 2seconds to fix make the biggest mess?
The site worked despite errors in my code but for a minor encoding difference it totally bugged!!!

Thanks again!! (The whole dreamweaver thing gave me the encoding idea Tongue )
I could have spent hours working on it without results without your help Tongue

CSS not taken into account in firefox

Well you got a nice complicated subject to get to grips with Jo charecter encoding is a difficult topic. Dreamweaver saved with a different file encoding, probably had no choice as it's a simpleton.

Just saw that the file as saved was a jumbled mess when I viewed it, ensure though that you dont save text files i.e stylesheets as unicode it puts a BOM mark in the file which throws things, you also have a few other errors in your style rules that I guess you have found by now.

Hugo.

might be a textedit/ notepad incompatibility

I think that when making sites it should be done in plain text, maybe the program you are using writes something to the file specifying things like encoding. For the web I believe that files should be plain text and have no aditional information in the file makup itself (only what is writen by the user).

Notpad I believe is a safe program to use, as is Dreamweaver. Word for instance is a bad program to use. I don't know much about TextEdit but I would imagine it isn't perfect for making sites if it writes aditional info into the file.

Will look more into this. Any Gurus know anything about this?

[edit] Cross posted with all above.

I make it plain text before saving but i guess there's some sort of encoding that goes on when I save. I'm not sure plain text would render my accents, though.

But I'm on a mac!!!
I'm not even using Word, either. So for once, much as I dislike Microsoft, I won't blame it Tongue

Be sure to change this;

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

to reflect the charset you're using.

cheers,

gary

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

That's why for the web we specify the character encoding in the document ei.

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />

That way you save a plain text doc that works but also can display different characters.

I think
