is there a way to have a cell with 2 colors in the background with one color about 3/4 of the way across the cell (Note: i do not want this to be an image.) the second thing i need is to hane my button overlap into another cell, can you please tell me how to do this or give me an example of some code?

You can't have two different backgrounds on one element - without using an image. You can nest an element inside the table cell and give it a width (or height) based on that of the cell and then give it the different background. If you use position:absolute and z-index you can ensure it sits behind other content in the cell, looking for all the world like part of the background.

Content can span more than one cell in two ways, by using "colspan", so the cell actually takes up the space of more than once cell, or by positioning the content absolutely so it appears above both cells - as is shown in this example
