What is Bon Echo? Where is a link?

It seems to be a Guru trend[1] to post about stuff without explaining themselves or providing a link to what they're talking about. :roll:

Hey TPH, can you run Bon Echo alongside 1.5 and 1.0.x OK?

You can run firefox 0.x, 1.x , 1.5, bon echo or even minefield (firefox 3) by creating a profile ("D:\Program Files\firefox1.5\firefox.exe" -p) for each and having
"D:\Program Files\Minefield\firefox.exe" -p Minefield
"D:\Program Files\firefox1.5\firefox.exe" -p 1.5
"D:\Program Files\firefox\firefox.exe" -p 1.0.7
...
as property in the shortcuts.
You can only have 1 instance running.
You can install the extension Nightly Tester Tools to force extensions compatibility.

SO what's the command line for bon echo?

is it -bonecho or -bon echo or -2.0 or something?

You have to create a profile using a shortcut with the path to any firefox (for me the shortcut property is D:\Program Files\firefox1.5\firefox.exe" -p).
You give it any name (I use a profile named 2)
Create a shortcut to your version 2 and modify the property to "D:\Program Files\firefox2\firefox.exe" -p 2

I've already got two profiles - test, which was my 1.5 profile with all my extensions and bookmarks, and speedbrowsing, which had nothing - just a clean install.

So should I do shortcuts something like this:

"c:\Firefox\firefox.exe" -p test
"c:\Program Files\bonecho\firefox.exe" -p speedbrowsing

If you have quick launch icons, also modify their property settings as fifefox will use the last profile and will modify the last profile in use.
When installing a new version (or reinstalling), select the custom install and untick Create icons (all of them) or it will modify all the properties of all the shortcuts and it may ruin your profiles. Untick launch now and use your shortcuts for the same reasons.

deer park and minefield use revision 1.9
bon echo uses revision 1.8

that's Gecko engine version nos?

These are all Gecko engines.
This is the one I use:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; fr-fr; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20051107 SeaMonkey/1.5a

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4

that's FF 1.5.0.4, I'm gonna check what my bon echo says.

Actually, if you create a .BAT file with this in it:

@echo off
set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
start "" "D:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=0

and use that to launch your browser, you can have more than one instance going. I can have 1.5 and 1.0.x going at the same time. I only asked above cos I wasn't sure if the same method worked OK for BonEcho.

Having more than one instance sometimes crashes my system (but it may be caused by an extension).

I installed Bon Echo this morning and had all three going for a bit with no problems.

But do you dare try . . . Minefield?

Also, anyone on a Mac would like to try out the Grapple Preview theme for Bon Echo alpha? Looks very snazzy.

Minefield is not stable, has lots of css bugs, memory leaks and so on.
The working features (addons, automatic update, bookmarks backup...) are (or will be) implemented in bonecho then in firefox.

Bon Echo ...Minefield ...what is it with all the stupid names! What's wrong with Version 2.0.3 or whatever? Bloody world's gone mad!!! ...grumble, mutter, parp! :oops:

Have to agree, not keen on the names. I hope they don't stick with them when they go to full release.

No, when its released it'll be Firefox. There is something somewhere on Mozilla that explains the choice of names (public parks) and their use.

Never heard of Minefield before now; Deer Park implies the public park, and yesterday I found out about Bon Echo, it's a park in Ontario.

But they're all code names - apparently 0.9 was One Tree Hill :?
