Dear all,

Searching for allowing users to change preferences, I came across this excellent website. I noticed this forum and would appreciate your review of my very first web site; an exercise (in Dutch!) in CSS, HTML, PHP and MySQL - took some effort to get it to where it is Smile

http://www.jojedo.nl

Cheers,

Jos

www.jojedo.nl ready to go live?

It is a little wide for 800x600 (it creates a horizontal scroll, which although isn't wrong, it's not overly desirable). I'd also suggest the design is a little bland, but it's functional so that's all purely opinion. Smile

One other thing - I've recently been working on a site here at work that makes use of the Fifa logo (the smiley face design), and there are a lot of very strict branding rules on using the logo, so I'd suggest you check that your site doesn't violate these (big companies like Fifa always have insane useage policies regarding their brands and event logos). You can read about theirs here: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/cn.html

Just going on the main page, your CSS and HTML are valid, which is cool.

I think I would have been tempted to create CSS rollovers on your main nav, rather than javascript ones - as the effect you've created is very simple and would be easily done with CSS.

Other than that... it's a football site! argh :S Good job though.

Laughing out loud

Thanks fberriman,

That is correct but the initial visiting of the test site showed that only a very small number (<2%) had 800x600. All others were 1024 or larger. What data are found for this/your site?

Design is not my strong suit!

Thanks for that, I see I am in violation ...

The nav is css based not javascript ... I used javascript in the nav only to go back/forward a page ... unless I have missed your point :?:

No, my mistake. I made a cursory glance to see what multimedia you had, and saw the javascript. Using it for next and back isn't so terrible. Smile

I only mentioned the 800x600 part because although yes, people are moving away from that resolution in their masses these days, it is worthwhile seeing how your site copes in smaller resolutions for those people that do use that size, maybe because they have no choice - or even they're on a smaller laptop or using a portable handheld device.

One other little thing I'd mention is with your CSS switched off, your content is displayed before your navigation. I'd be tempted to switch the order in the markup of the content and the nav, so that when tabbing through the site you can easily get to the navigation first - or if you really prefer it afterwards, add a "skip to nav" link as the first link available on the website. It's nice to think about accessibility.

Hmm, see what you mean. I'll take that into account when overhauling the site as it mean switching in all php files. Thanks for the feedback,

Jos

Not a problem. If I wasn't at work, I'd try and be more useful!

erm...I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but most say that it's preferable for the content to come first so that ppl with screen readers (which read direct from you xhtml) don't have to read thru the navigation every time. If you're unable/unwilling to do this, a skip to nav link can be used...

My personal pref is to have nav first (for CSS disabled access viewers, and those who like to tab/keyboard access the nav quickly) AND the skip nav for screenreaders (although, if markup is done well, a lot of screen readers can target headings and links without skip links, so I feel it's more useful to keyboard access users), so I have both angles covered, similar to such sites as http://www.456bereastreet.com/

I'm not disagreeing with you...but you did say it as tho it was fact and that jojedo wasn't taking accessibiilty into consideration:

these things can be argued from both sides of the coin and as we've been discussing in other threads, none of this is carved in stone...I just feel that it's more a matter of opinion...

Apologies. I was just sharing a "thought". In his situation, he has a very link heavy area of content, and without skip links or reordering, it's a bit of a beast to navigate the site without a mouse.

And yes, it's a coin thing, which is cool! I was just explaining why it is my preference to do it that way.

Sorry if I came across as abrupt! Honestly, not intentional. Laughing out loud Laughing out loud

Trying to "second guess" what the user is interested in was/is my problem hence the many links on the first page. I assumed that minimal clicks would be required to get to that info ... at the price of showing many options.

Had not even thought about some of the points raised here Laughing out loud
