Hi. First I just want to say that I think it's really cool how the guru's are helping the noobs.

I'm working on a layout with 2 side float cols and mainContent in center. I'm fairly new to CSS but want to learn. I don't have any other browsers available to me so I'm sure this is bug ridden.

http://reignofshadows.org/test_html/style.css

Since the html contains php modules I'm inserting the simple code here hoping it will help to expose the problem.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>Reign of Shadows &raquo; <?php //php module ?></title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./style.css" />
</head>

<body>
<div id="banner" align="center"></div>
<div id="header" align="center"><a href="/opening7.swf">-Intro-</a></div>

<div class="container">

			<div class="rbsidebar">
				<div id="rsidebar"><?php //php table module ?></div>
			</div>

			<div class="lbsidebar">
				<div id="lsidebar"><?php  // includes div ul file ?></div>
			</div>
			<div id="mainContent" //includes mainContent table ?></div>
<br class="clear">
</div>

<div id="footer" style="clear:both"><? // includes the footer file ?></div>

</body>

</html>

Viewing the site IE shows that the mainContent is missing. and moving the mainContent up reveals the box model problem...which means I need the Holly hack, but not sure how to apply it. Also can't seem to get the backgrounds for lbsidebar and rbsidebar to repeat: y. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated

First, thanks for the reply Daybreak_0. I'm almost there I think.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>Reign of Shadows &raquo; <?php // globals ?></title>

</head>

<body>
<div id="banner" align="center"></div>
<div id="header" align="center"><a href="/opening7.swf">-Intro-</a></div>

<div class="container">
	<div class="outer">
		<div class="inner">
			<div id="mainContent"><?php // news content table ?></div>
			<div class="rbsidebar">
				<div id="rsidebar"><?php // include the login table ?></div>
			</div><br class="clear" />
		</div>
			<div class="lbsidebar">
				<div id="lsidebar"><?php  // includes the nav ul ?></div>
			</div><br class="clear" />
	</div>
<div id="footer" class="clear"><?php // includes the footer file ?></div>
</div>

</body>

</html>

Trying CSS, using IE5/Win

please disregard this thread. I just realized that I don't need to nest the side layers. I'll redo it with simple left/right floats and position the php divs on them absolute. I'll get the same effect less hassle. Thanks for your help Daybreak, I did learn a tremendous amount. I'll be sure to make my next version a little more browser compliant before I post again. Wink
