The following page displays perfectly when I preview on my own computer, but after publishing none of the css seems to display in firefox. I have checked the link to my external sheet, and I can't find a problem...can't see the woods for all the trees in the way!
Page: http://www.rcs.rang.k12.va.us/SCHOOLS/RCHS/index.htm
CSS: http://www.rcs.rang.k12.va.us/SCHOOLS/RCHS/css/main.css
any help would be appreciated

14 Minutes? That's got to be a new record! We do have lives you know, we're not omnipresent.

/edit

just realised I posted 24 minutes after your original . . . kinda negates my point Tongue

None the less it's not our problem and we are not here as a service Smile

Have you tried making your stylesheet 'Persistent' rather than 'Preferred'? do so for now just to eliminate possible causes although it shouldn't effect things adversely, at the moment I cant see anything obviously wrong, you do have a problem with your scripting comments that the validator is not happy with it would be wise to clear that up so that it has no possible bearing on the matter. I can get the stylesheet if I force caching through a css editor, also it looks as though it's not completely being ignored.

What type of server is that that you're running on?

Hi there - I've been trying to help him on a tech forum, but it's completely beyond me as to what's wrong after a few hours, so I gave him a link to the experts Smile.

It's bugging me like crazy too now lol.

If anybody would like a brief background on the problem (about 10 short posts), see here Smile

Being a member here I just thought I'd make life easier by offering extra available info.

Thanks for the link crimsone it may have helped in the first instance to mention a few of the areas covered.

You make the stylesheet 'persistent' by removing the title attribute lets get rid of that to narrow down possible but unlikely causes also for the moment is it possible to remove the javascript as it is flagged as having a problem so lets just eliminate it from the equation as well, then see how things stand.

I asked about the server as I'm not familiar with it and I suppose it's just possible it's not set up to deliver text/css.

I've just pm'd you a link to the exported javascript and html file too.

EDIT: Javascript is now showing errors on lines 1, 81, and 82.

The error on line 1 is my fault. The error on line 2 I'm not sure of, but more importantly, firefox is reporting the error that may be the cause of your problem now...

Quote:
Error: The stylesheet http://www.rcs.rang.k12.va.us/SCHOOLS/RCHS/css/main.css was not loaded because its MIME type, "application/octet-stream", is not "text/css".

That one IS a MIME issue - I just don't know on which end - whether it's Firefox in its use of Http 1.1 (i've had a similar issue with Yahoo) or your server for using a bad MIME, or the code itself. I don't think it's the code, but I'm not going to say that for definite.

Maybe Hugo or somebody else might have an idea?

It certainly seems to be a server end problem application/octet-stream is a binary file format and is meant to opened by specific apps, either the server mime types are not set correctly and the .css file is being labeled incorrectly causing the browser to ignore it but happily opening it after it's cached to local machine or it's being transferred incorrectly as a binary file through an ftp program.

I think you need to ask the server tech to confirm what mime type is associated with the extension .css

I must admit I had a feeling it was a mime type issue.

Usually in Firefox when you type the url to the .css file it will display the css file in the browser. With yours, I got a prompt to download the file. So it's definitely the mime type Wink

Problem of the Day: CSS doesn't display in Firefox - Help!

a small success.

following the advice of a techspot member i changed the doctype from

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet -->
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/rchs.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<head>

to

<!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en">
<html>

however, my background image doesn't work...any thoughts?

I'm afraid that's an incomplete doctype, and therefore useless afaik

I assume you've fixed the bg problem as I can see it...

and as an aside, the following code can be shortened from:

border-right-width: 1px;
	border-right-style: dotted;
	border-right-color: #000099;
	border-left-width: 1px;
	border-left-style: dotted;
	border-left-color: #000099;
	border-bottom-color: #000099;
	border-bottom-width: 1px;
	border-bottom-style: dotted;
	margin-left: 8px;
	padding-top: 4px;
	padding-bottom: 4px;
	padding-left: 8px;

to:

border: 1px dotted #000099;
border-top: none;
margin-left: 8px;
padding: 4px 0 4px 8px;

it'll save you time in typing, and is more readable (helping you find bugs and the such)

Indeed. Your Doctype is incomplete, and now Firefox is rendering in quirks mode.

As for the member above who can see th backgrond corner image on the right, were you using Firefox, as that's where the problem with it lies.

As far as I've seen, you still have the same problem with that corner background image. It doesn't display in Firefox, but hitting the "edit css" option in the webdeveloper toolbar causes it to display correctly.

:? :? So does reverting to the original DTD re-instate the problem? fwiw never listen to the advice of tech type people on these sorts of matters to tell you to switch a browser to quirks mode is a foolish thing that has lots of ramifications I'm sure he/she is not aware of.

Did they confirm that the file was being delivered correctly then?

Why can we still not open the file in the browser ?
