..
It's been months since my last table structure but i'm afraid i need your help
I've .. ah .. actually been considering reverting back to them!
I just can't seem to get what i want, that i could get easily do with tables. The thought that CSS is not worth the effort constantly goes through my head and it's stronger now than ever!
I even feel like writing a table tag now ... <t .. no must resist <tab ..
This is a serious problem
Anyway the point of this story is i can't get what i want out of CSS. Can anyone help me by pointing me in the right direction?
I can do basic layout in CSS fine but when it comes to advanced layouts, there are so many work-arounds and hacks that i don't even know how to use. Is there a tutorial somewhere around or something that will show me lots of advanced designs and how to go about implementing them?
One of the main problems i have is making a column style layout without one column stretching out lower than the others because one has more content than the other. This is highly annoying especially when the left column has a different background colour than the right. Looks very unprofessional, especially when one column has like maybe 1 line of text.
Another one is making a layout where a footer div box will ALWAYS sit at the bottom of the page. When i have tried a layout like this it always ends up half way up the page because once again, there wasn't much content in the boxes above and so the browser displayed it straight after the content in the above boxes has finished.
I hope you guys can make sense of this. Any help will be appreciated. I'm currently working on a business web page and i need to make it look as professional as possible. CSS isn't providing much comfort ](*,)
Thanks.
Hi I'm Dan and I'm a table-aholic ..
We understand your concerns and doubts brother [-o<
It is very painful (re)learning the CSS way of coding pages. Akin to reliving your birth
About 6 months ago I was in the exact same position (redesigning both our company web site, and one of our clients). i had read enough about standards/CSS etc. to have a crack at it. Our own web site was meant to be a quick and easy job (1-2 weeks)... it took about 5! (And still failed code-structure-wise.)
All I can say is, stick at it, there will be moments of enlightenment and flashes of realisation. You will never look back (and will scorn on table-based layouts thereafter )
Have you checked out the links page on this site: http://www.csscreator.com/links/linkspage.php
Of those, you'll find answers for your footer question on www.alistapart.com (amongst the other questions you no doubt have). For tutorials, check out: http://css.maxdesign.com.au/
Here's my own links page (most of them the standard sites): http://pub.c-o2.net/links.co2
Also, check out the externals link on www.zeldman.com for further CSS links (at the bottom of the externals page, there's CSS links).
And of course, we are all here!
Hi I'm Dan and I'm a table-aholic ..
For a specific layout that meets your needs go to:
http://www.positioniseverything.net/piefecta-rigid.html
It's very complex, but ClevaTreva has just today
released a killer page making tool that might just
be the answer to your prayers, brother Dan.
http://207.44.137.103/ctindex.php
I am in awe, particularly since I know intimately
just what it must have taken to code that tool.
Be aware that this layout is still kinda new, and
adding stuff like forms or iframes could cause
unforseen events. I happen to know that *tables*
inserted in the main col can be buggy in the mac,
but you have set them behind you, so that's okay.
Be strong, Dan, and don't backslide into table-slavery!
You are among friends who want to see you be happy
and well adjusted. Keep looking up, but don't trip, okay?
