Look superb . . . . how long before we get Frontpage-esque questions. . . . :roll:

I'll start with the software I started the blog with: iWeb, included in iLife '06.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; "><span>Except for </span><a href="http://www.samkass.com/blog" title="http://www.samkass.com/blog">a blog exploring my brief fixation with Quartz Composer</a><span> (before that app crashed on me and lost my work once too often), my most prolific blogging has concerned my 9 month old son, Ted. I used it to share his happenings with the family as a way of getting the latest news out to everyone fast. My primary purpose for buying iWeb is that it seemed like the ideal way to combine all the movies, photos, and blog entries that I had concerning Ted into one application, on one site, with greatly reduced maintenance time.</span></div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">So far it doesn't look like it's going to work out that way. iWeb is a version 1.0 app. I wouldn't say it feels rushed to market, but it's definitely a "Jack of all trades, master of none."</div>

<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">My current solution is to use iBlog for the basic TedBlog, and hack its template to offer a right-hand menu to the photos and movies. The blog gets sent to my personal domain name hosted at my favorite ISP. The photos get exported from an iPhoto album and uploaded to that same ISP. The movies get uploaded to .Mac.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">At blogging, iWeb is weaker than any other solution I've seen yet, including the previously-included-with-.Mac iBlog. Nothing is auto-formatted, and every entry has to be adjusted by hand to remove/resize the entry's image, text location, colors, etc. The built-in templates are pretty weak and hard to customize. There is no integrated commenting or haloscan support. You can't edit the dates, lock things to the top as a "Top Story", there are no categories entries, and there's no easy way to add things like GoogleAds. In short, if you're moving from any other app, such as iBlog or any of the other blogging-specific Mac applications, you will feel extremely constrained by iWeb.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">At laying out pictures on photo pages, it appears to be abysmal. In iPhoto, even the most basic possible page that iPhoto exports (if you "Export..." and select "Web Page"), will automatically divide the images into multiple pages and auto-link them with each other. Not iWeb. If you select a large library of photos to export and drag it to a photo area, it will just happily add over a hundred images to a single web page. And if you want something other than two columns with the image name as the label, forget it. It would take me forever to move my photos into iWeb and adjust every page individually. No thanks. Unless you like single-page photo albums with a hundred images in no particular order titled by filename, just use Galerie or iPhoto itself.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">As for movies, the raw .Mac solution, and its integration into the Quicktime Player works far better than iWeb. If you open any movie in Quicktime Player on the Macintosh, and chose "Share..." from the File menu, you get a nice export to .Mac, with all your other movies nicely linked up at the top of the page. You can sub-divide your .Mac pages into categories and everything within the category will automatically be inter-linked. In iWeb, it appears to be one movie per page, with the inter-linking at the top of the page including everything else in the entire site. Unlike .Mac's home-page, iWeb doesn't seem to offer any way of creating sub-sections of a site for movies or photos or whatnot without creating a completely separate "site" for each section.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>

<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">In short, if you're buying iLife '06 just for iWeb, don't expect a best-of-breed product. It looks like it has a lot of potential down the road with a very Pages-like feel and live editing, but for now it's far too rough around the edges to do anything halfway serious. There are a lot of other reasons to buy iLife '06, from third-party DVD-R support in iDVD, to easier iMovie editing, to Podcast support, to some slick updates to iPhoto. But for your web needs I'd recommend checking out one of the many other site tools.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; ">Of course, I'm not enabling comments on this site, since this is my first (and likely last) entry that's being entered in iWeb itself, and thus comments are not supported.</div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; text-decoration: none;"> </div>
<div class="paragraph Body" style="line-height: 20px; padding-bottom: 0pt; ">(After publishing, I noticed another fun feature of iWeb blogging with .Mac: URLs are truly ginormous! Sorry about that-- nothing I can do.)</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

Does that count as throwing IE into Quirks mode? Tongue

Oh yeah . . . the entire page is wrapped in a form.
