Is it just me, or are others getting the error message "Bad Request" when opening spell-check?

cheers,

gary

If your web page is as clever as you can make it, it's probably too clever for you to debug or maintain.

interesting never seen that before, although there is often a failure to respond leaving the same blank screen , maybe it's the same but not noticed the error messages; anyway you should worry , imagine what it's like when it fails to respond for me, and people wonder why I take so long to post

I'm waiting for the punctuation checker personally.

(huh didn't need to spell check any of that)

Yep, when checking this post I got nothing, just the "checking document" message. Removed the url and it works fine. Strange :?

Well, I'll blame Windows. After things suddenly slowed, I did my bi-daily reboot and the spell-check is back to working. First time for that little Win artefact.

cheers,

gary

If in doubt Reboot, cures all ills, definitely when things slowdown, never been impressed by the geeks game of seeing who can go the longest between re-boots, just daft; Windows ain't designed well enough for that.

Yeah, well. If I didn't have my Linux box, I'd probably think that was normal. I restarted everything 87 days, 13 hours and 11 minutes ago, after a shutdown -h for a bad electrical storm. I know that because that's how long the Deb box has been up w/o a reboot. Before that, it had been up more than 500 days.

My nephew, who works for an MS oriented VAR, doesn't understand why I don't like Windows. Did I mention rebooting every day or two?

And now for something completely different. (Strike up "Liberty Bell March" --J. Sousa)

My Linux box regularly has download throughput speeds of 11+ MBytes per minute[1], while the Winbox on identical hardware, and the same LAN, router and ADSL line can only manage 4 MBytes per minute. Does Windows actually have so much overhead it can't do better?

cheers,

gary

[1] This meets or slightly exceeds my ISP's stated service level, so that's one of the few things Verizon has got right.

Hmm, packet loss? have you tried tweaking the tcp/ip properties for the 'tcp receive window' in Win98 it's set fairly low in Win XP it's much higher, raising it should increase throughput speeds decreasing packet loss.

Hugo.

So I see we are going to play the "who can keep their box booted for the longest" game. Smile

I don't see a point, it seems a waste of electricity. I only keep mine on when I'm actually using it.

To some extent TPH I agree in a non server set up there is no credible reason to keep a box running when not being used, but then again the amount of electrical energy being consumed by an idle machine is miniscule, the fans probably consume the most and that's micro volts. One good reason to keep a machine running is that hard drive life is considerably reduced through the continual re-booting, powering up is the most stressful time for a hard drive, as it is for most critical components.
