I have been working on this site for some time and have it to the point where it's almost done. I checked it in Netscape 7, and it looks ridiculous, not anywhere near the IE and Opera versions.

Does anyone know what's going on with this? There's a lot of extra code in the CSS, but that shouldn't affect the page, if it's not being used, right?

Many thanks,
Lisa

Frustration with NN

Hi

And.

Oh my. To say it is messed up is an understatement. Makes me realise why I always design for Mozilla and Safari and then hack to make Opera and IE work.

This page shows you what it looks like in Safari 1.2

http://www.danvine.com/icapture/detail/83123.html

(Valid for 24 hours only)

Which is equally as bad. Not only does it mess up the header, but both Safari and Moz push stuff off to the right so there is a scrollbar there.

i. Take all the content out (especially the flash, use a single color gif to place a marker) and tidy up the code so it is viewable in a coder (ie indented by at least two spaces per div/tag). As it stands, it is hard to see where each part ends, and what is inside what.

ii. Split the design into parts and try to fix each bit.

As it affects both Moz and Safari, I suspect that it is the float not clearing problem (dunno what the bug name is).

How to fix it?

Add a new style:

.clear{
clear:both;
font-family:sans-serif;
font-size:0px;
line-height:0px;
height:1px;
overflow:hidden;
}

then replace every </div> with
</div><div class="clear"></div>

The look at it again. If that has fixed it, take one
<div class="clear"></div> out at a time to find the problem, checking Mozilla AND Safari each time (the bug affects these browsers differently, and often it is needed for one and not the other, and vice versa).

Hi,

I don't know exactly what the problem was, but your suggestion of taking out all the content and working on the code bit by bit did the trick.

I now have a site that looks the same on each browser that I checked.

I appreciate your help!

Lisa

You're welcome for whatever inspiration may have been imparted, but the answer lay within you, you had only to find it.

I am happy you have an answer.
